194621353Houston TX 1946. Hardcover. Very good. Black buckram album 10" x 13" containing a one-page printed introduction by Preston and 60 gelatin silver prints by Waddell inserted into pre-cut corners rectos only each with a fairly detailed typed caption underneath. Very good condition. According to the Introduction Clyde Waddell was Chief Photographer for the Houston Press before entering the Army where he was attached to the Public Relations Staff of the Southeast Asia Command. After two busy years on documenting action on the Burma front Waddell took the photographs in this album while on leave in Calcutta. "By the time he completed this project which brought him into some of the remotest out-of-bounds areas" writes Preston "he was flooded with requests from Americans and Britishers for copies of his photographs. That is how this album came to be.As a documentary of Calcutta it's tops." The album includes wonderful views of the city and its people including many bustling street scenes buildings Hindustan Building Karnani Estates American Red Cross Burra Club Jain Temple Nimtolla Mosque the Stock Exchange billboards street vendors and performers among them a snake charmer and shops and markets--including a wonderful shot of American GIs browsing at a book stall. There are also scenes of poverty and struggle including striking tram workers homeless people sleeping in the streets an opium den and a woman dying on a sidewalk as people walk by indifferent to her plight. The captions are chatty offering both information and Waddell's personal commentary on the scenes. This particular copy of the album belonged to Lyle Oberwise 1908-1993. Like Waddell Oberwise was a an American Army photographer assigned to the China-Burma-India theater of operations. But he is better known as a prolific Milwaukee street photographer whose work was discovered only upon his death. More than 43000 slides he shot in Milwaukee between 1945 and 1993 now reside at the Milwaukee County Historical Society. There is a photo of Oberwise in his military uniform mounted on the verso of the title page of this album. Also tipped in or laid in are a Red Cross Guide Book to Calcutta Agra Delhi Karachi and Bombay 93 pp with folding maps; tickets and programs for two American Red Cross-Burra Club tours of parts of Calcutta; An American Red Cross Guide to Calcutta for Servicemen 4 pp including a double-page map; and an uncredited 8" x 10" photograph of the Taj Mahal. hardcover books

Many pages cleanly detatched from from perforated tabs but photos remain clean.

Album of storage tanks agitators and other liquid-related metal machinery photos compiled by the manufacturer which – judging by the locations of most of its clients – was located somewhere in the Midwestern United States. Majority of the photos show a single piece of equipment captioned with its order number destination e.g. "National Ice Cream Co. San Francisco" the product name e.g. "Deep Upright Closed Tank" shipment date dimensions and other relevant notes; several images show the product installed in its destination factory but most appear to have been taken before shipment. Many clients were ice-cream and other dairy processing plants and the majority were American; but a few were international including the Nestle plant in Switzerland and a Cuban brewery. Among the American non-dairy plants were the Coors brewery in Colorado a Perth Amboy chemical plant and a California paint manufacturer. Two images depict a dozen salesmen posing at the tank factory and others show factory workers in motion. Likely assembled as a salesman's book or perhaps company archive with its many cyanotypes a striking vernacular book and an informative record of industrial food preparation at the dawn of the Ford age. paperback books
1990230141Beverly Hills and Desert Hot Springs 1990. White leatherette three-ring binder photo album holding thirty-one sheets containing sixty photos mostly b&w 8x10 professional shots and film stills but also many candid b&w and color shots three contact sheets of Mazursky as an actor in various costumes from around 1961-62. Also laid in are five paper documents including an American Film cover a special screening invitation for "Moscow on the Hudson" and most interestingly his Varsity Masquers Kayfer Award for supporting actor for the 1949-50 season. Many of the photos in the album are by Alan Pappe several with his signature and date at bottom. The photos are mounted on self-adhesive backing. Thus they are well-preserved but would be difficult to remove. One depicting Donald Sutherland and Mazursky on the "Alex in Wonderland" shoot has large corner chips as if someone attempted to clumsily remove the photo from the page. Light wear and soiling to the binder several blank sheets at the end. Also included are 38 handwritten postcards from the Mazurskys to the Buchners almost all written by Betsy and signed by her or as "Betsy and Paul" or "The Mazurskys." Content is mostly your average friendly greetings and catching up on family activities. Also included are several cards from other artist friends and one handwritten letter from Richard and Pandora Lupino related to Ida Lupino signed by him and his wife Pandora a wedding invitation for the marriage of the Mazurskys' daughter Meg Purdy and a few film-related publicity pieces. Finally a 9x13.5 inch b&w studio portrait of Paul Mazursky from 1970 signed by Pappe with his studio stamp on rear loose rather worn. Finally Paul mazursky's autobiography "Show Me the Magic" cocked and well-read but a first edition with warm lengthy inscription signed by the filmmaker and a signed inscribed card laid-in. The photo album is a wonderful visual history of Mazursky's career from his Varsity days and appearance in "The Blackboard Jungle" through the 1980s with "The Tempest" "Moscow on the Hudson" "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" and other activities as late as 2003. One shot breaks this bibliographer's heart: Jill Clayburghe Paul Mazursky Robin Williams and Raul Julia - all gone now. unknown books
