Internally fine. An important volume in the canon of early 20th century photography noted in the first printing by Parr & Badger's seminal work The Photobook Vol. One. This copy has been INSCRIBED by Genthe and dated in 1915 to "Miss Esther Cleveland - so that she may know what the real Chinatown looked like when she was the new un - with __ wish fron Arnold Genthe". National Association of Cotton Manufacturers bookplate on front pastedown and ink stamp on title page call number at lower right corner of front board otherwise unmarked and internally quite clean. This edition is undated and we have not been able to determine whether it is earlier or later than another edition that is dated 1909 and credited to Kobe-based photographer S. Ichida Ichida Sota 1843-1896. In 1909 the Kanegafuchi Spinning Company employeed more than 14000 workers and was the largest cotton spinning company in Japan. The company was uncommonly committed to the welfare of its laborers providing schooling for both adult workers and their children and offering them affordable housing healthcare and recreational opportunities. The high-quality images in this work show the company's offices in Tokyo and Hyogo the mills in Hyogo opening ceremonies of the "School for Female Operatives" the kindergarten plant nursery dormitory and family housing dining hall baths retail shop infirmary recreation hall and playground. The Federal Sugar Refining Co. run by the Spreckels family built its refinery on the east bank of the Hudson River in 1901 reorganizing what was once the National Sugar Refinery; the same site would later be taken over by American Sugar Refining and still operates under the ownership of Domino Sugar. 1910848531910. PHOTOGRAPHY - 20TH CENTURY ORIGINAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPH - ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON NEW YORK CITY MAYOR WILLIAM JAY GAYNOR 1910. American Press Association event occurring August 6 1910 reverse of photo dated August 10. Silver gelatin print photograph 6 9/16 x 8 1/2 inches. Small chip and slight creasing to bottom lower corner faint impression to top from marking on reverse. The three men in the photo are framed from the torso up. The photograph shows the wounded Mayor Gaynor who survived the attempt but died three years later from lingering effects supported by two unidentified "friends." The reverse bears typed notes to the effect that the photo was taken by the American Press Association's photographer unnamed and that the photo was taken moments after Commissioner Edwards knocked the would-be assassin a disgruntled former city employee to the ground. Gaynor was aboard ship in New York Harbor about to depart for a European vacation when the attempt occurred. He was shot at point blank range in the throat. The outlines of the Mayor's hat and coat as well as the two men's faces have been enhanced by hand presumably for press reproduction. unknown books
