First edition number 76 of 100 copies with 5 hors commerce this being one of 80 copies on papier rose; 159 x 123 mm 6¼ x 4¾ in; 10 mounted gelatin silver photographs 116 x 77 mm 4½ x 3 in text translated by Robert Valençay; pink wrappers light wear peach printed folding cover with titles on upper side in black light wear to extremities and folds a near-fine copy in a custom box by Devauchelle; 44pp.<br /> La Poupée evolved out of a series of events in Hans Bellmer's personal life: his cousin Ursula Naguschewski moving from Kassel to Berlin in 1932; an encounter with renowned dollmaker Lotte Pritzel and his attendance of a performance of Jacques Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann in which the protagonist falls in love with an automaton; and his mother shipping him his old toys. <br /><br />Bellmer constructed several dolls the first dating from 1933 which he assembled and photographed in strange and disquieting configurations. Ten of these photographs were published in Germany as Die Puppe 1934. It was Bellmer's cousin Ursula who while studying at the Sorbonne in 1934 apparently first brought Bellmer's photographs to the attention of André Breton in Paris. In 1934 the Surrealist journal Minotaure published a portfolio of these images and in 1936 one was published in an issue of Cahiers d'art devoted to the Surrealist object. Guy Levis Manos published this expanded French Edition with an introduction by Bellmer translated by Robert Valencay. Une des 20 rares suites en couleurs toutes signées et justifiées par Bellmer. Chaque gravure séparée par 2 feuillets blancs est justifiée au crayon en chiffre romain et signée par Bellmer exemplaire VIII/XX. Exemplaire personnalisé par Hans Bellmer qui a biffé le titre À Sade et l'a remplacé par « Moeurs et coutumes » et y a ajouté un grand envoi signé : « pour Luce Barbier avec les grandes amitiés de Hans et Unica ». Il comporte également à la place du feuillet de justification imprimé une justification manuscrite de la main de l'artiste. Depuis le début des années 30 Hans Bellmer s'intéresse à l'oeuvre de Sade : « j'ai l'intention de me consacrer intensément à l'oeuvre de Sade en plusieurs projets d'illustration des 120 journées de Sodome et de La Philosophie dans le boudoir » qui resteront inachevés. Cependant Bellmer réalisera des dessins qui lui serviront ultérieurement pour la réalisation de ses deux grandes suites rendant hommage à Sade : À Sade 1961 et Petit traité de morale 1968. Dans ces deux ouvrages les épreuves résultent de la surimpression de deux cuivres gravés. Pour les exemplaires en couleurs elles sont donc en deux teintes variables selon chaque planche ; « chacun dans une couleur différente - combinant les images par condensation au sens freudien du terme créant ainsi des gravures totalement différentes malgré la répétition des cuivres » Flahutez op. cit. Le tirage de À Sade est limité à 55 exemplaires en noir dont 5 sur Japon auxquelles s'ajoutent 20 suites d'auteur en deux couleurs justifiées au crayon à la main tirées à part sur vélin d'Arches. Luce Barbier est la fille de Charles-Henri Barbier ami d'enfance nantais de Claude Cahun ; cette dernière et Suzanne Malherbe en feront leur légataire universel. Plusieurs oeuvres de Bellmer des collections du Centre Pompidou sont entrées en dation via Luce et Bettina Barbier en 2001. Le feuillet de justification de cet exemplaire a été entièrement exceptionnellement composé et autographié par Bellmer. On connaît pour ces exemplaires en couleurs trois autres portant également le titre modifié. Ils ont en revanche une justification imprimée. Le texte avait précédemment paru en 1944 aux Documents Surréalistes sous le titre Trois tableaux Sept dessins Un texte accompagné alors de photographies originales d'oeuvres de Bellmer. Les dessins gravés près de dix ans plus tard en 1953 étaient quant à eux destinés à l'origine à une édition de L'Anglais décrit dans le château fermé d'André Pieyre de Mandiargues qui ne verra pas le jour : « Ce projet n'aboutit pas à cause des exigences difficiles de l'artiste et de son retard pour la livraison des cuivres. Residing in Paris since 1938 he was arrested as a German national and therefore a suspect in the eyes of the authorities. Imprisoned in the Camp des Milles near Aix-en-Provence alongside Max Ernst he ended up taking refuge in hiding. The artist had created his Doll in 1934 and it is therefore not without emotion that he expresses here his reunion with his most famous artwork. He also evoked to Bousquet his desire to continue his illustrated project on L'Anatomie which later became his famous illustrated book Anatomie de l'image published in 1957.Bellmer and Bousquet have known each other for a short time but the mutual understanding between the two surrealists was already at its height. The artist unreservedly approves the poet's text on his "justification of sodomy" a pathetic but very real consequence of the wound on the sexuality of Joë Bousquet bedridden since the Great War. He does not hide his enthusiasm to be entrusted by the poet with a common on the "amplified justification" of the text which however remained in the embryonic state and was not published.

Two pages in black ink on two sheets of fine pink paper with autograph envelope enclosed. Discrete fold marks inherent to the sending of the letter. Exceptional lament of a cursed artist sacrificing his life to his art. Endangering his health Bellmer carefully supervises the printing of the first retrospective catalogue of his works Vingt-cinq reproductions of which he had received the first copies ""le soir de la Noël"" ""on Christmas evening"". He addresses his Bordeaux collector-patron Claude Richard from his modest Latin Quarter studio which had seen the birth a year earlier of his masterpiece Les Jeux de la Poupée. Bellmer takes up his pen and transcribes his malaise onto these two old rose pages similar to the color covering some of his Doll photographs as well as to that of the band surrounding the collection of this famous suite of photographs. The words themselves finely chiseled with pen strokes disarticulate in the image of his works; the letters come undone and reveal the extreme distress of the artist at the end of his strength and resources: ""Excusez je vous prie cette lettre décousue mais je ne vais pas très bien"" ""Please excuse this rambling letter but I am not very well"" . ""ma vie est redevenue très très dure"" ""my life has become very very hard again"" . ""vous ai-je remercié des 16000 que vous avez eu l'amitié de m'envoyer il y a deux semaines environ - Cela m'a permis d'activer la fabrication du recueil une fois de plus"" ""did I thank you for the 16000 that you were kind enough to send me about two weeks ago - This allowed me to accelerate the production of the collection once again"" This concerns a work laid out by his own hand bringing together twenty-five of his works accompanied by texts by Nora Mitrani Gisèle Prassinos Jehan Mayoux Jean Brun André Pieyre de Mandiargues Jacques de Caso and Yves Bonnefoy. Bellmer had received the first copies a few days earlier: ""J'y avais mis un effort affreux ; depuis trois semaines je traîne une grippe qui par le froid glacial de la rue Mouffetard et de l'atelier d'impression chez Larrive a pris depuis 10 jours un tour dangereux. Pour l'instant je ne tiens plus debout mais pour ne pas me déclarer vaincu je suis obligé de courrir sans cesse pour trouver le minimum d'argent nécessaire pour ne pas mourir de faim"" ""I had put a terrible effort into it; for three weeks I have been dragging around the flu which due to the freezing cold of rue Mouffetard and the printing workshop at Larrive's has taken a dangerous turn for the past 10 days. The manuscript also contains a beautiful passage on the artist's relationship with his patron and also mentions Cocteau as well as his partnership with the Hugo Gallery in New York directed since 1944 by former dancer Alexandre Jolas: 1907-1987: ""Quant à l'encadrement de mon tableau c.à.d le vôtre je m'en occuperai avec plaisir car c'est très important pour la mise en valeur de la chose. Je connais bien un des meilleurs encadreurs il a encadré les choses que Cocteau et Morihien m'avaient achetées il y a quelques années que la Hugo-gallery m'a pris cette année. Il ne doit peut-être trop bien marché sic. Dès que je trouverai deux tickets de métro je vous dirai le prix qu'il demanderait. A very scarce example of Hans Bellmer's pre-Surrealist commercial artistic work.Long before Hans Bellmer fled to France in the 1930s and his association with Surrealism the artist undertook training at Berlin's Technische Hochschule in engineering. Bellmer abandoned those studies in 1924 and began to associate with sympathetic artists and political figures such as John Heartfield George Grosz and Otto Dix while working for Malik Verlag as a typographer and designing and illustrating book covers. Sserafimowitsch's 'Der Eiserne Strom' The Iron Flood a tale of the Red Army encircled by the Whites and breaking free was one of a small group of books illustrated by Bellmer - he is credited erroneously as 'A. Bellmer' - that also includes among others Walter Serner's 'Die Tigerin' and 'Der Pfiff und die Ecke' Henri Barbusse's 'Enchainements' and Walter von Hollander's 'Gegen Morgan'.The front cover of 'Der Eiserne Strom' shows Bellmer's drawing of a long train of laden refugees with wagons and children emerging through a narrow defile. The foremost character depicted appears to look back over his shoulder with some anxiety to a mêlée of shadowy figures horses and sabres or bayonets.
