André Pieyre de Mandiargues écrivait au sujet des gravures de ce livre : « L'Anglais décrit dans le château fermé inspira à Hans Bellmer une suite de sept gravures au burin et à la pointe de diamant qui sont parmi les plus belles que l'on sache de lui . Presque quinze ans plus tard en 1967 ces gravures furent publiées avec un texte de Bellmer. Aisément l'on y reconnaîtra divers personnages et diverses scènes de L'Anglais ». Préface à la première édition N.R.F. de L'Anglais. Le texte avait précédemment paru en 1944 aux Documents Surréalistes sous le titre Trois tableaux Sept dessins Un texte accompagné alors de photographies originales d'oeuvres de Bellmer. Les dessins gravés près de dix ans plus tard en 1953 étaient quant à eux destinés à l'origine à une édition de L'Anglais décrit dans le château fermé d'André Pieyre de Mandiargues qui ne verra pas le jour : « Ce projet n'aboutit pas à cause des exigences difficiles de l'artiste et de son retard pour la livraison des cuivres. Pauvert céda ensuite les cuivres à Georges Visat. » Dutel L'ensemble sera alors réuni pour cette présente édition qui s'inscrit dans la lignée des travaux effectué sur les textes de Georges Bataille Pauline Réage ou Sade : anatomiques érotiques et subversifs.
