Il volume è nato in effetti come catalogo di una ambiziosa mostra itinerante, iniziata prima a Parigi, poi trasportata a Tokyo e Kyoto con un enorme successo di pubblico. Alinari la porta ora in Italia per celebrare il centenario della nascita del fotografo più popolare del novecento. Organizzato tematicamente, il libro ci guida in un'incantevole passeggiata per i giardini di Parigi, lungo la Senna e tra la folla dei parigini.
