At the bottom of the photograph: Aimé dupont 574 fifth Avenue New-York. Portrait of the actress taken in New-York during the great American tour of 1880-1881 256 performances in 50 cities. Sarah Bernhardt poses in elegant Parisian attire her gaze turned skyward. Signed in the plate: Copyright by A. Dupont. Good overall condition one dark stain on the right of the photograph near the margin. Aimé Dupont was a Belgian photographer first active in Brussels then in Paris. He settled in New-York with his American wife Etta Greer herself a photographer. Already in Paris the photographer had specialized in photographs of actors and singers from the Opera and he renewed this specialty for the New-York opera and all the French artists who came to the USA. It is therefore not surprising that Sarah Bernhardt visited his studio to create a recent photograph dedicated to her American tour. Nadar unknown

Difficile non conoscere i ritratti fotografici di Felix Tournachon, in arte Nadar, abile come nessun altro nel cogliere la "sembianza intima" dei suoi contemporanei nella Parigi della seconda metà dell'Ottocento. Nato sotto la Restaurazione e uscito di scena alla vigilia della Grande Guerra, Nadar visse quasi un secolo da personaggio pubblico di primo piano. In questa biografia Stéphanie de Saint Marc ci svela gli altri volti del grande fotografo, incarnazione di un "paradosso vitale dalle mille sfumature": i turbolenti esordi che spiazzarono l'opinione pubblica con le prime, pioneristiche vignette, contribuendo alla nascita della petite presse, la futura stampa scandalistica; i "colpi di testa", come quel mattino di marzo del 1848 in cui mollò tutto e, a piedi, partì con l'esercito francese alla volta della Polonia per liberarla dall'invasore russo; l'insaziabile spirito d'avventura che lo portò prima in cielo, a fotografare le nuvole a bordo di un pallone aerostatico, e poi giù nelle viscere della terra, a immortalare le catacombe di Parigi utilizzando una sorta di flash ante litteram; il carattere goliardico di un artista chiacchierato "che in cinque minuti passava al tu e aveva ottomila amici", ma al contempo introverso...
