19181910Lausanne, Imprimeries Réunies, 1918. Un volume in-8 (24 x 16 cm), 78 pages, broché sous couverture bleutée imprimée sur le premier plat. ÉDITION ORIGINALE. 51 poèmes illustrés de 18 dessins-calligrammes mécaniques en hors-texte reproduits en noir. Tirage unique sur vélin bouffant ivoire non numéroté. Le recueil est "terminé à Gstaad, le 5 avril 1918". Note historique : Francis Picabia (1879-1953) rencontre en 1917 à Paris Germaine Everling qui allait devenir pendant plus de quinze ans sa compagne dévouée. Au cours d'un bref voyage qu'ils effectuent ensemble aux Martigues, il écrit les premiers poèmes de ce qui allait devenir "La fille née sans mère", titre d'un dessin exécuté à New York en 1913. Puis au mois de février 1918, il part pour Lausanne avec sa femme (Gabrielle Buffet) pour y consulter un neurologue de renom; il y est bientôt rejoint par sa maîtresse. Il publie alors l'ouvrage grâce auquel il rencontre Tristan Tzara et le groupe Dada de Zurich. "La fille née sans mère" est, au même titre que "La Mariée" de Marcel Duchamp une machine célibataire ; l'œuvre est parallèle au "grand verre" de Duchamp, "La Mariée", est accompagnée par ses notes, "à la manière" [dit Duchamp], "d'un catalogue de grand magasin où l'image et le texte ne font qu'un tout". Rappelons que l'activité proprement littéraire de Picabia à l'époque de 391, est toute entière placée sous le signe de la mécanique; obsédé par la machine, fille née sans mère du cerveau de l'homme, Picabia n'aura de cesse de lui faire produire, en 1918, l'œuvre ambivalente parfaite comprenant dix-huit dessins et cinquante et un poèmes "équivalents". Les dessins, présentant des mécanismes étranges aux titres troublants de "Machine de bons mots", "Machine à idées actuelles dans l'amour", etc., ne sont pas sans évoquer l'intrigante "Mariée mise à nu" de Marcel Duchamp. La série s'achève avec le très surréaliste autoportrait du buste de Man Ray affublé de lunettes-grille intitulé Dans les yeux des autres : ""Cela signifie-t-il que Man Ray considère ce portrait à lunettes comme ce qu'il donne à voir à autrui et qui constitue un double masque puisqu'il est inspiré d'un masque de plâtre et que les yeux sont rendus quasiment invisibles par un accessoire aussi spectaculaire "" Agnès Vinas. Six bound issues of Charm magazine a New Jersey women's magazine with a general focus on beauty style cooking and hosting and the finer things of New Jersey society but with forays into literature politics and art. Volume III Number 3 April 1925 is especially notable for featuring the first appearance of Mina Loy's "Modern Poetry" considered a minor modernist classic "often cited and regularly studied" Sophie Oliver in The Journal of Modern Periodical Studies 2020. The magazine was published by Bamberger's Department Store. This copy is inscribed on the half title to Frank Goodman 'one of the last of the old-time Broadway press agents a star handler and headline hustler' New York Times. The drawing and inscription are on the half title. The inscription which is bordered by and incorporates the drawing reads 'For Mr. Frank Goodman Man Ray April 2 1963'. The floating eye is above Ray's signature and the nose and mouth extend beneath the inscription. CONDITION: Nice copy in the original black cloth in gilt and copper in first issue jacket complete with $7.95 price slight surface wear to jacket with wrinkle at top; book has been recased with new endpapers; some light staining to top and bottom edges of text. Man Ray born Emmanuel Radnitzky 1890-1976 American painter photographer and conceptual artist active in France a leading light of the Dada and Surrealist movement. Jess McKinley's obituary in the New York Times offers a brilliant look back at Goodman's career: 'In an era when movies like 'Sweet Smell of Success' made Broadway seem like the most glamorous and gritty terrain in entertainment Mr. Goodman was as reliable a presence as broken hearts and dreams come true. From 1939 when he started his career to 1961 Mr. Goodman represented more than 50 Broadway productions including eight shows in 1960 alone. Over the years Mr. Goodman would act as a booster and sometimes as a baby sitter for every type of show person and show personality from the volatile genius Jerome Robbins of 'Gypsy' to the delicate ingénue Audrey Hepburn in 'Gigi' in 1951 to the predictably haunted playwrights William Inge and Clifford Odets among others. Summing up his career in his unpublished memoir Mr. Goodman started with an adage about the publicity game: 'You don't get paid for the work you do; you get paid for the grief you take.'
