19341688961934. MAN RAY. Man Ray: Photographs 1920-1934. By Andre Breton and others. Paris. Illustrations after photographs by Man Ray throughout. 4to. original wrappers spiral bound preserved in a recent linen cloth box. Hartford: James Thrall Soby n.d. First Edition stated second edition on title-page but only one edition was in fact published. An exceptional copy of the classic compilation of Man Ray's work Inscribed by Man Ray to Chilean photographer Jorge Opazo. In addition to the text by Breton there are contributions by Paul Eluard Rose Selavy Marcel Duchamp and Tristan Tzara. Man Ray himself provided an introduction and Picasso a portrait of Man Ray. The tendency of the spiral bindings to disintigrate have made this a scarce book and in this copy the spiral binding is still intact. There is slight soiling to the rear cover which is white and a few insignificant internal marks which in no way detract from the desirability of this copy. 1948119735Beverly Hills CA: Copley Galleries 1948. First Edition. First Edition. One of 500 copies issued. INSCRIBED by the author and artist on the front endpaper: "For Charlotte Bebe and Louis Barron. Cordially Man Ray Hollywood 1949." An exceptional avant-garde association and in one of the strangest alphabet books ever published.

Around this time the Barrons were beginning to experiment with committing electronic sounds as music to magnetic tape and were ultimately not only pioneers in that field inventors. One year after the date of this inscription they would compose their first piece "Heavenly Menagerie" and they would go on to produce the first electronic film score for the seminal 1956 science fiction film "Forbidden Planet" credited as "tonalities" rather than "music" at the time due to union rules. The Barrons' earliest compositions were slow and laborious as their early work preceded the digital age and involved building circuits and tape splicing to create even the smallest sequences of sound. In the decades that followed electronic composition has become a worldwide phenomenon in every musical category. A tremendous association between pioneers in two major fields of twentieth century artistic endeavor.

Near Fine in illustrated cloth covered boards with no dust jacket as issued. White wraps with color illustrations and black writing on covers and spine 256 pp. bw illustrations throughout. Text entirely in French. "Already in 1972 the National Museum of Modern Art had a major retrospective devoted to Man Ray. Like all exhibitions held in collaboration with the artist at that time he extensively showed his creative activity and its fascinating diversity: paintings collages drawings sculptures assemblages etc rayographs. In relation to the photographs the other media were there in very small numbers. The current exhibition at the Centre Pompidou proposes therefore is the complementary part of the previous. The focus is on photography by bringing together hundreds of photographs both masterpieces of unknown or little known aspects of his production: portraits of Dadaists and Surrealists friends the celebrities of intellectual and artistic Paris the Anglo-Saxon writers creative photography Illustrative for surrealist magazines nudes and rayographs but also views of Paris the photo mode and commissioned portraits. Some of these blocks unknown in original prints have recently been drawn and will be shown for the first time. As for painting and objects fifty highly selected pieces will give a renewed vision of success he has achieved in various moments of his life with fresh and inventive works. "I paint what cannot be photographed I photograph the things that I don't want to paint . I would rather photograph an idea than an object and a dream rather than an idea." Man Ray's own words suggest the essence of his brilliant original and deeply influential photographic oeuvre. Taking up photography in 1915 for the purpose of reproducing his paintings he earned money doing the same for others when he went to live and work in Paris in 1921. This led to one of the richest careers in the history of photography ranging from portraits of celebrated artists musicians and writers such as Andre Breton Marcel Duchamp Erik Satie Arnold SchUnberg T.S. Eliot and Gertrude Stein to the pictures using light effects outside the camera for which he is famous cliche-verres rayographs and solarizations. These photographs are among the most exciting and revealing manifestations of the profusely fertile artistic impulse which made Man Ray equally celebrated as a painter sculptor writer and filmmaker. Besides many classic images this book includes a huge number of photographs that have never been seen before including portraits of Virginia Woolf and Antonin Artaud and a large selection of erotic pictures. They add up to a truly revealing look at Man Ray whom Cocteau called "the great poet of the darkroom." - website description. Philippe Sers unknown books
