"Prenant la direction de la revue Littérature en 1922, André Breton fait appel à Francis Picabia et à Man Ray pour illustrer une revue jusqu'alors presque exclusivement investie par des écrivains. Saisissant l'occasion, Picabia inaugure un nouveau style en concevant les couvertures des neufs numéros de la revue, compositions tour à tour étranges, cocasses ou irrévérencieuses. Pour la première fois depuis leur entrée dans la collection du Centre Pompidou, ce catalogue dévoile les dessins originaux de ces couvertures augmentés de pas moins de dix-sept projets alternatifs, restés inconnus jusqu'à il y a peu. Quant à Man Ray, portraitiste habituel du "groupe Littérature", il publie pour la première fois dans la revue ces deux icônes de la modernité photographique que sont devenus Elevage de poussière et Le Violon d'ingres. En réunissant photographies et dessins originaux, dont ceux de Max Ernst et de Robert Desnos, eux aussi contributeurs de la revue, l'exposition "Man Ray, Picabia et la revue Littérature (1922-1924)" rend compte d'un moment méconnu, entre la fin du mouvement Dada et le début du Surréalisme, qui, malgré sa brièveté, s'est révélé extraordinairement fructueux."
