About the photographer: Emil Otto Hoppé 1878 – 1972 was a portrait travel and topographic photographer active between 1907 and 1945. Although Hoppé was one of the most important photographic artists of his era and highly celebrated in his time his body of photographic work sat entombed in a London picture library for over thirty years after his death which led to his being forgotten in the latter half of the twentieth century. Curator Graham Howe retrieved Hoppé's work from the picture library in 1994 and merged it with the Hoppé family archive of photographs to make it available to the public. Verlag Ullstein hardcover

62185Jonathan Cape. London. 1922. 4to. LIMITED EDITION OF 560 COPIES 500 COPIES FOR SALE this is no. 49. pp. 27 i. 32 photogravure images one with added colour each with a text leaf. Original cloth-backed decorated paper boards now dusty paper labels on spine and front cover a touch of wear to spine ends and corners of the 32 plates 17 have fold creases to the lower inner corners because the plates are tipped-in at the top edge and careless closing of the pages cause the floating corners to catch and fold occasional very small marginal tear to the lower edge some foxing at the ends and some marginal dust marks despite all of which the images remain dark and opulent and worthy of Hoppé's pre-eminence as the best portrait photographer of his day. With a signed inscription to MABEL FARMBOROUGH Christmas 1922 from CHARLES BASS Vicar of Steeple Claydon - 'A slight acknowledgement of much helpfulness in this and in many former years.' Bass was vicar at Steeple Claydon for 32 years and there is now a stained glass window in dedication to him in the church. HOPPÉ 1878-1972 born in Munich and educated at the best schools in Munich Vienna and Paris he was destined for a career in banking. He moved to London in 1900 to continue his training in finance working with Deutsche Bank. He had intended to move to Shanghai but meeting and marrying the sister of an old school friend whilst in London he remained there and having become captivated by photography eventually gave up finance and became a full-time photographer. He opened a commercial studio and within a few years was the undisputed leader of pictorial portraiture in Europe. See BILL JAY. Hoppé a Personal Snapshot - 'To say that someone has a "household name" has become a cliché yet in Hoppé's case the phrase is apt. Rarely in the history of the medium has a photographer been so famous in his own lifetime among the general public. He was as famous as his sitters. It is difficult to think of a prominent name in the fields of politics art literature and the theatre who did not pose for his camera.' Jonathan Cape. London. [1922]. 4to.
