Hoppe-Seyler was the first to describe the optical absorption spectrum of purified red blood pigment which he named hemoglobin. He described hemoglobin's two distinctive absorption bands and confirmed that hemoglobin contains iron. Solid and VG with light rubbing and a bit of light staining along the spine and minor abrading at the rear hinge. Internally clean as could be with no writing or markings of any kind. Tall quarto each photo merits a preceding caption page which identifies the subject and her nationality.
