Oblong 4to. Group of 193 original albumen print photographs documenting the Indian portion of the world tour of Archduke Franz-Ferdinand of Austria 1863-1914. This official voyage of the Archduke lasting from December 1892 to October 1893 had explicit diplomatic ethnographic and scientific aims as well as an unspoken goal of permitting the Archduke to recover his health after a diagnosis of tuberculosis. The royal party traveled aboard the imperial cruiser Kaiserin Elisabeth the most modern vessel of the Austrian fleet. They spent two weeks in Ceylon now Sri Lanka before arriving in India in mid-January 1893. The party spent two-and-a-half months in India before touring Nepal returning briefly to Calcutta to embark for Singapore at the end of March. The world tour continued with visits in Australia the Pacific Islands Japan Canada and the American West before the Archduke sailed from New York to Le Havre.<br /> The Archduke's stay in India included diplomatic engagements military reviews and a formal visit to the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad who was in late Victorian times the richest man in the world. The Archduke was put up in the Nizam's Bashir Bagh palace. The Archduke also spent considerable time hunting hawking pigsticking bagging some 20 tigers and leopard antelope sambhur black buck and just about every other beast of the chase in Ceylon he had hunted elephant. Franz-Ferdinand was a devoted hunter whose lifetime game bag exceeded 200000 animals; on the world tour his entourage included a huntsman and his taxidemist Eduard Hodek 1858-1929 who was also the Archduke's photographer and boon companion. The itinerary of the Archduke's travels permits the close dating of many of the photographs and events of the trip. A detailed list of the photographs is available. An exhibition in Vienna in 1894 publicized the collections made by the Archduke during his world travels and his diary was published as Tagebuch meiner Reise um die Erde in two volumes 1895-6. Upon the death of his father in 1896 Franz-Ferdinand became the heir to the Austrian throne. His assassination at Sarajevo in 1914 proved the spark that sent Europe and the world into war.<br /> The photographs document a wide range of subjects both formal and informal including views of the Archduke's activities grand receptions by the Nizam of Hyderabad military reviews sporting and equestrian events topographical vistas palace scenes as well as ethnographic and hunting images including substantial game bags. Many of the formal photographs of events in Hyderabad were taken by Lala Deen Dayal 1844-1905 noted court photographer to the Nizam and the first Indian photographer to gain international recognition for his work as a pioneer of photography in India only a few bear his studio stamp; but the images are identified in Höfer. His library catalogue 2 vols. 1896 1904 remains an important document in the history of angling bibliography and collecting. Sage's section on "The Atlantic Salmon" in Salmon and Trout 1902 is a synthesis of his own first hand knowledge as a fisherman and his assessment of the extensive literature. The Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing remains the work for which Sage is best known.<br /> <br /> One of the pinnacles of nineteenth century fishing book design and production with the notable provenance of financier Jay Gould. Sage who lived in Albany would have known Gould from equestrian circles as both men maintained stables of trotting horses and bred Morgan horses. Spectacular unrecorded privately printed diary recounting a hunting expedition in Kerala southern India from 27 July to 22 September 1865 "the best shikar trip I have ever had". The narrator and his companion A.M.D. bagged 43 heads of eleven different types of big game including tiger bear elephant bison chettul and others with original albumen photographs mounted and captioned in a neat hand. <br /> The unnamed narrator mentions passing hunting parties one such Brown Jones and Robinson suggests that he read Trollope when the novel appeared as a serial in the Cornhill; the terrain around Hassanoor Ghaut was familiar to him for he had planted fruit trees and roses near a camp building; mention is made also of Hamilton Brooke and Faulkener hunting the area the previous year. This may be Douglas Hamilton who in 1892 published a long retrospective 'Records of Sport in Southern India'.<br /> The narrator buys prepared photographic plates from a departing hunter who had ordered them from the Patent dry Collodion Co. of Birmingham. The two hunters were accompanied by the dog Scamp chief among a pack that included Tinker and a plucky three-legged dog Pinko both killed by a panther and bearers of cowardly deportment save for the plucky Rajii who stood by when the narrator faced bear and elephant. At times the grass was too high for a man to get through easily.<br /> Notably the hunter describes many photographic incidents including how the frontispiece "The Tiger's Siesta" came to be made. One day D. encountered a a tigress atop the head of a young elephant and shot her despite the commotion. The young elephant ran off. The next day going to photograph the tigress the narrator was charged by a herd of elephants. He shot an elephant cow and they moved on to photograph the elephant "taking the tigress with us. The men who carried her threw her body into the elephants arms and it looked so strange the tigers mouth being curiously drawn up as if she were laughing that I thought I would try a picture in that position.". All of the photographs are captioned in ink and all but the first nine which were taken at Interlachen near Gainesville relate to southwest Florida. The album includes scenes of the grounds of Charles Francis Jr. at Interlachen and the residence of Goerge Long; the railway station an office car and a street scene at Trabue; views of the Hotel Punta Gorda under construction; waterfront scenes along the Punta Rassa; views of Fort Myers; a Spanish Fishing village; a "Cracker" family and their orange grove; Judge Ziba King and his house at Fort Ogden; scenes of the Myakka River Bartow and Zolfo Springs and a number of hunting and camping scenes. Please state number of trought caught and weight of the fish and place where caught." <br /> The most prolific contributor to the log was Dr. Jedediah H. Baxter 1837-1890 Surgeon General of the U.S. Army personal physician to President James Garfield Baxter was not present at the assassination of the president in July 1881 gone fishing. He wrote some 99 entries and signed many others. James L. High American attorney wrote 29 entries and signed records of kills. One day such heavy quantities of logs came down that Baxter had to abandon fishing; on other days visible discharges of sawdust from upriver were a nuisance.<br /> <br /> On 15 July 1887 J.M. Oliver fishing along near the end of the Island pool was threatened with violence by the Superintendant of the Restigouche Club if he didn't get over to the other side of the water. "Notwithstanding Robinson's scaring" Oliver returned to the same pool the next day and caught a 23-lb. salmon and hooked a much larger one. Discussions with members of the club Robert Goelet owner of Toadbrook Lodge and Mr. Penfold followed "They said they were advised by counsel McAllister of Campbellton that our right extended not to the thread of the stream but the middle of the water surface" and declined to "adjust" matters; a long letter was sent to the Executive Committee of the Ristigouche Club at 120 Broadway in New York.<br /> <br /> Other anglers at the Club waters include Senators O.H. Platt of Connecticut Wade Hampton of South Carolina and George Edmunds of Vermont with wife and daughter; angling author J.A. Henshall The Book of the Black Bass Favorite Fish and Fishing etc. and his friend Dr. W.W. Dawson; John Milton Oliver later a founding member of the Izaak Walton League a conservation group whose entries have a literary flair; James Daniel Richardson Confederate soldier and Tenessee congressman 1885-1905; Samuel H. Kauffmann newspaper publisher and trustee of the Corcoran; Ripley Hitchcock E.A. Hitchcock his wife and his brother Henry Hitchcock; F.J. Baxter E.T. Allen C.B. Burnham T.B. Anderdon's library included the 1653 Compleat Angler and this discourse between Angler Painter and Host is both homage to the seventeenth-century masters and an attempt to elucidate some of their sources and influences. The author intended it "for the entertainment of a few gentlemen fishers" the work being based on a tour he made along the Dove. The privately printed large-paper edition limited to twenty-five copies appeared in 1845; a trade edition in small 8vo format was published by Pickering two years later. <br /> The inscription is to his wife Anna Maria 1796-1880 the second daughter of William Manning MP whom he married on 4 March 1816. <br /> "Anderdon was an enthusiastic fisherman and a walking tour through Dovedale the country of Charles Cotton one of the earliest professors of the art of angling gave him the idea of compiling a volume on The River Dove: with some Quiet Thoughts on the Happy Practice of Angling. Printed in 1845 for private circulation and for sale two years later it contained many anecdotes of Cotton and his country life with advice on successful fishing" ODNB. Very Good with some discoloration boldly written and easily read. 17 1/2" x 11 1/4". <br /> <br /> <p>The following is taken from an article in the September 2 1879 issue of the Springfield Ohio Republic Times: "The party of abandoned creatures professing to give exhibitions as Female Base Ball players about the country came here yesterday Monday and after being driven around town on show proceeded to the base ball grounds on the Fair Grounds and played a few innings of a burlesque base ball game. There were only eleven of the players so-called and a difficulty arose in consequence as to making even sides. It was finally arranged by putting the biggest and smallest player on the same side giving the odd one to the other. The score was 999 to 1001 when the game closed on account of darkness. A couple of hundred reprobates who would be ashamed to let their wives and grown-up children know where they were crowded the home plate and foul ball lines and a sprinkling of rising young candidates for penitentiary records gazed upon the game from the seats. There is nothing to be said of this part of the exhibition excepting that it was more degrading than anything that has struck the town since the last 'living statuary' show. A beer stand did a good business near the diamond field the 'boys' seeing to it that the players did not go thirsty." <p>Our reporter then goes on to explain a fight that began next between the team business manager Clark Frankhouse his assistant and a young Black man named Ben Hayes. A follow-up piece on the following day declares Hayes sustained only minor injuries. "The only real damage by the affair has been to the peace and dignity of the city of Springfield." Copies of newspaper reports included with lot.<br /> <br /> <p>Debra Shattuck author of the book Bloomer Girls said in an interview: "The earliest female professional baseball teams including the Female Blue Stockings of Philadelphia and Female Red Stockings of New York 1879-were comprised of teenagers and young women drawn primarily from the ranks of circus and theatrical troupes. Few had experience playing baseball. They spoke of their uniforms as "costumes" mimicked mannerisms of male players "kicking" at umpires for example and purposely incorporated humor into their games forming bucket brigades to relay balls in from the outfield skipping around the bases etc."</p> . Conceived as the first comprehensive encyclopaedia of pastimes enjoyed by the modern British gentleman and gentlewoman the highly successful Badminton Library took its name from the estate of the Duke of Beaufort who edited the series. Various other peers contributed volumes such as Lord Walsingham who authored Shooting and the Earl of Suffolk who wrote Racing and Steeplechasing. The first volume Hunting 1885 was dedicated to the Prince of Wales. These upper-class credentials were integral to the original conception of the series but it was assumed that the Duke of Beaufort's contribution "would be purely nominal" Campbell p. 128. Laffan 1848-1909 worked on San Francisco and Baltimore papers before coming to write for the New York Sun. He became the publisher of the Sun in 1884 and in 1897 he purchased the paper with backing from J.P. Morgan. In later life he was interested in Chinese porcelain and complied the catalogue of Morgan's collection.<br /> <br /> This group of deft and detailed illustrations recording camp scenes hunting incidents and outdoor vistas was drawn by Laffan for his article "Deer Hunting on the Au Sable" Scribner's Monthly vol. XV no. 6 1878 pp. 753-767 which recounts a successful hunting trip in northern Michigan with a party organized by John Erwin of Cleveland with a bag of 23 deer or as the final illustration records "a ton and a half of venison".
