The Archive of Meadow Run Press sporting book publisher 1989-2010.
For two decades William D. Trego's Meadow Run Press set the standards for American sporting book publishing and issued a series of finely produced original works by new and established authors as well as sporting club histories privately printed angling volumes and a select group of reprints of neglected classics. The books among them Sea Level and Marquesa by Jeffrey Cardenas The Henryville Fly Fishers by Ernest Schwiebert Live Water by Tom McGuane and the cult classic The Starlight Creek Angling Society by Harry Middleton are notable for their content and for a consistent attention to design illustration and the form of the finished book. Many of the titles were also issued in limited deluxe editions with special bindings and additional material by the artists and authors; several were printed letterpress by Bradley Hutchinson of Austin Texas. The books were uniformly well received by reviewers and readers alike and several were reprinted on multiple occasions.
The publisher Mr. William D. Trego variously of Stone Harbor and Far Hills New Jersey was educated at the Philadelphia College of Art now the University of the Arts Temple University and Villanova University. He established the press as his interests in collecting evolved from American literature to American sporting books and to the outdoors. From modest beginnings in 1989 with a reprint of a classic American angling work he undertook to publish original works and commissioned suitable illustration art from living American artists including Peter Corbin John Swan John Rice and others. The Meadow Run Press books reflected the publisher's style and something of his character as well: Tom McGuane now a legendary figure in American outdoor writing wrote to Mr. Trego "The books are beautiful and you've done such a fantastic job on this project - in every way! I've been writing for a living for almost three decades and this is by far my most pleasant publishing experience" autograph letter signed dated 27 December 1996 in the archive.
The Archive includes editorial business and production correspondence relating to the books and to their sale to mail-order and trade customers with significant exchanges with authors Tom McGuane Ernest Schwiebert Tosh Brown David Swanson John Cole and others as well as with the artists commissioned by the press. Mr. Trego views The Starlight Creek Angling Society as one of the most significant accomplishments of the press and this is documented in the original typescript of the book as well as in the extensively edited drafts and abundant correspondence with the author who died untimely soon after the book was published. The other important discovery of the press was Jeffrey Cardenas whose first book Marquesa has become a modern salt water angling classic. M.L. Biscotti's A Bibliography of American Sporting Books 1926-1985 1997 is a significant addition to the tradition of sporting reference works. Mr. Trego is himself a well-regarded writer and one large archive box relating to his earlier articles is present. The archive also includes a variety of submission manuscripts for works that the press declined to publish.
As a bookman Mr. Trego is known for his his meticulous insistence on condition; all of the publisher's copies of books are in superb condition most with warm inscriptions from the authors and often with original drawings by the artists. Much of the smaller format artwork has been put into boxes to accompany notable typescripts such as the raw unedited typescript of Schwiebert's Henryville Fly Fishers or the substantial archive of Harry Middleton material. Generally the condition of materials in the archive files is fine; some of the correspondence is on thermal fax paper and thus may present conservation issues in the longer term. Mr. Trego is at work on a book on Harry Middleton and Starlight Creek and retains all publishing rights in the Middleton material suitable acknowledgment of the owner of the archive would be made when the book is published. A full description of the contents is available.
A substantial archive and a rich glimpse into American sporting publishing at the close of the twentieth century.

DETAILED LISTING OF CONTENTS:
Box 1: Schwiebert Henryville Fly Fishers publisher's copy inscr. by author & artist; Henryville Fly Fishers illustrations by Taylor Kane boxed; Doherty Notes from a Fishing Journal 2010 publisher's copy with inserted note and photograph from author; original illustrations by Chet Reneson for Notes from a Fishing Journal 2010; Spruce Creek Rod and Gun Club publisher's copy inscr. by authors with set of proofs of same; Cardenas Marquesa publisher's copy inscr. by author; McGuane Live Water inscr. by author & with signed watercolor by artist John Swan; Spencer-Churchill Tarpon Fishing 1998 ed. inscr. by artist John Rice & Randy White author of intro.; Spencer-Churchill Tarpon Fishing deluxe ed. copy no. 1; Brown Megalops publisher's copy inscr. by author & artist John Rice; Rice original illustrations for Tosh Brown's Megalops boxed; D. This official voyage of the Archduke lasting from December 1892 to October 1893 had explicit diplomatic ethnographic and scientific aims as well as an unspoken goal of permitting the Archduke to recover his health after a diagnosis of tuberculosis. The royal party traveled aboard the imperial cruiser Kaiserin Elisabeth the most modern vessel of the Austrian fleet. They spent two weeks in Ceylon now Sri Lanka before arriving in India in mid-January 1893. The party spent two-and-a-half months in India before touring Nepal returning briefly to Calcutta to embark for Singapore at the end of March. The world tour continued with visits in Australia the Pacific Islands Japan Canada and the American West before the Archduke sailed from New York to Le Havre.
The Archduke's stay in India included diplomatic engagements military reviews and a formal visit to the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad who was in late Victorian times the richest man in the world. The Archduke was put up in the Nizam's Bashir Bagh palace. The Archduke also spent considerable time hunting hawking pigsticking bagging some 20 tigers and leopard antelope sambhur black buck and just about every other beast of the chase in Ceylon he had hunted elephant. Franz-Ferdinand was a devoted hunter whose lifetime game bag exceeded 200000 animals; on the world tour his entourage included a huntsman and his taxidemist Eduard Hodek 1858-1929 who was also the Archduke's photographer and boon companion. The itinerary of the Archduke's travels permits the close dating of many of the photographs and events of the trip. A detailed list of the photographs is available. An exhibition in Vienna in 1894 publicized the collections made by the Archduke during his world travels and his diary was published as Tagebuch meiner Reise um die Erde in two volumes 1895-6. Upon the death of his father in 1896 Franz-Ferdinand became the heir to the Austrian throne. His assassination at Sarajevo in 1914 proved the spark that sent Europe and the world into war.
The photographs document a wide range of subjects both formal and informal including views of the Archduke's activities grand receptions by the Nizam of Hyderabad military reviews sporting and equestrian events topographical vistas palace scenes as well as ethnographic and hunting images including substantial game bags. Many of the formal photographs of events in Hyderabad were taken by Lala Deen Dayal 1844-1905 noted court photographer to the Nizam and the first Indian photographer to gain international recognition for his work as a pioneer of photography in India only a few bear his studio stamp; but the images are identified in Höfer. Some of the views of and around Calcutta are from Samuel Bourne or Bourne and Shepherd.
A spectacular visual record of 1890s India the opulence of the court of Hyderabad and sporting episodes in the life of Franz-Ferdinand. Superbly bound example of a book of almost legendary beauty rarity and importance recounting the author's adventures at Camp Harmony on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick and drawing upon his long experience fishing the river. Dean Sage's contributions to angling literature are few in number but profoundly influential: "Ten Days' Sport on Salmon Rivers" published in the Atlantic in 1875 is a classic account. His library catalogue 2 vols.1896 1904 remains an important document in the history of angling bibliography and collecting. Sage's section on "The Atlantic Salmon" in Salmon and Trout 1902 is a synthesis of his own first hand knowledge as a fisherman and his assessment of the extensive literature. The Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing remains the work for which Sage is best known. "Borden 1842-1912 was fond of bindings and the library contained examples of all the better known contemporary craftsmen . in sumptuous modern style" Cannon. One of the pinnacles of nineteenth century fishing book design and production in a striking custom binding by Riviere for a celebrated collector. Folio 18 3/4 x 12 1/4 inches. A fine copy of "Alken's most important work. It must always form the cornerstone of any Alken collection" Tooley

The plates and text between them offer a thorough survey of the sports practiced in Great Britain in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The subjects covered including riding fox stag and otter hunting beagling racing falconry various types of dogs and horses shooting grouse partridge pheasant snipe wild-fowl bittern pigeon fishing for pike and salmon fishing from a punt prize-fighting cock-fighting badger bear and bull-baiting and perhaps most extraordinary of all: "owling." It is interesting to note that although both the artist and the author felt that it was necessary to record badger bear and bull baiting they did not hold back from condemning all three 'sports' as barbaric.
This copy is a later issue/impression. The additional pictorial title is dated 1821 rather than 1820 as in the first issue a letterpress title in French has been added only the English title is present in the first and second issues and the explanatory text leaves are signed consecutively from 1 to 50 Podeschi records an intermediate state/issue where only some of the text leaves are numbered. The watermarks suggest a date of 1824 or later. The plates very carefully hand-colored are all aquatints by I. Clark and retain all of the liveliness that is such a feature of this work.
The artist Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became a sporting artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J.T. Barber and exhibited his first picture a miniature portrait at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 onwards he "produced paintings drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity. He is best remembered for his hunting prints many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s . To many sporting art is 'Alken' and to describe his work or ability is quite unnecessary" Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp. 75-76. "Exceedingly rare but not unique as stated in the sale catalogue of the Huth Library" Schwerdt. Although the work is undated ESTC and bibliographies usually date it to 1705 but on page 31 is a reference to "a Curious book lately printed The Angler's Sure Guide" published in 1706.

First edition thus a compendium consisting of extracts from the section on angling in The Pleasures of Princes from Hungers Prevention on "low-belling" and other methods of bird-catching Country Contentments on hunting coursing dogs and Markhams Method poultry etc. The publisher was George Conyers one of the most prominent chapbook publishers of the period.
This first edition is rare with no copy in the British Library. ESTC locates one copy only in the UK at the Bodleian and four in North America: Harvard Houghton Library; Princeton; Yale University Center for British Art; and Beinecke. The second edition of 1712 is almost equally rare.

A manuscript note on the front free endpaper verso gives the ownership as E. A. Hunter 13 Angel Hill Bury St Edmunds Suffolk noting its gift to him by Coleman in 1874. The receipt Edmund Arthur Hunter 1866-1937 was eight years old at the time; his father was a wine merchant. The note claims that "This book originally belonged to Lord Byron's grandson by whom it was given to Rushbrook who gave it to Coleman." If this story is true the most likely candidate for first owner in this chain of provenance is Ralph Gordon King Noel Milbanke 2nd Earl of Lovelace 1839-1906. ESTC N14392. Original three quarter red morocco titled in gilt on upper cover "The/ Yellowstone/ and/ The Great Geysers/Strong/1875." Ownership signature of Rhoby McM Gillespie Chicago wife of the photographer on title. Spine neatly rebacked. First edition. 2 folding maps 7 line drawings and 7 tipped-in albumen photograph portraits with fine manuscript captions. 143 pp. 1 vols. 4to. In the Yellowstone: "Such fishing I have never had before" One of the earliest descriptions of Yellowstone being the account of a hunting expedition to the north-western territories undertaken by the author and six officers plus a contingent of enlisted men including US Secretary of War Gen. Wm. W. Belknap and US Inspector General R. B. Marcy who fell ill and nearly perished on the trip as well as Gen. James W. Forsyth Lt. G. C. Doane Gen N. B. Sweitzer and Col. George L. Gillespie whose photographic portraits illustrate the book. The party traveled some 5000 miles by rail stage steamer and horseback in 53 days seeking elk deer buffalo and other game as well as wild fowl; due to the season of the year game was not as plentiful as hoped but the abundance of trout exceeded all expectations and almost 500 large ones were caught see pp. 54-57. Another impediment to hunting were the "hostile Sioux who were constantly lurking around in great numbers;" it was perhaps prophetic that on September 3 1875 they met and were entertained by General George Armstrong Custer of the 7th Cavalry at Fort Lincoln just nine months before the Battle of Little Big Horn. As befitting "one of the most famous sportsmen in the country" Custer and his wife and sister lived in great state on the post surrounded by the General's hunting trophies of which there were many. Circumstances prevented Strong from retaining the head or hide of the huge leader of a buffalo herd which he shot but the event is described in lively detail. Also noteworthy are the author's splendid descriptions of Yellowstone and the surrounding territory. Many accounts of Yellowstone and the Northwest were to follow but this one in its depiction of the country the sport and the individuals who participated in this early adventure is a gem and equally rare.
A FASCINATING AND SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNT OF FRONTIER SPORT AND EXPLORATION IN THE AMERICAN WEST. Earl 1874-1947 is previously unrecorded and never seen by Ordeman whose 2005 book collected prior knowledge on the prints. One other print by British artist T.P. Earl Flares is noted by Ordeman date unknown but in personal communication he reports that his information comes at second hand. and has never seen "Brown Betty". The print is however in the collection of the Belair Mansion Museum established after Woodward's death at his Maryland residence. Brown Betty won the 1933 1000 Guineas race and the painting by T.P. Earl that Woodward commissioned is dated 1933 in the plate. The paper and production of this color print differ from the aquatint horse portraits commissioned from Connett and Frank Lowe. Given the date of the portrait we conjecture that Woodward commissioned the print in London and thus it may predate and be the point of origin for the series of prints commissioned from Connett. In recent conversation Ordeman advanced a similar hypothesis.
The Megargee print "Marguerite" with her colt Gallant Fox is from the collection of Derrydale Press publisher Eugene V. They were preceded only by a series of four monochrome photogravures for John Muir's Picturesque California 1888 and two other individual prints both black and white.

Arthur Burdett Frost is now perhaps best known for his sporting pictures and prints but his lack of interest in deer-hunting meant that he rarely pictured shooting scenes that featured anything other than small game. His image 'Hunting the Deer' is recorded and illustrated in Henry M. Reed's The A.B. Frost Book Charleston 1993 pp.101 104-5 but the author was apparently unaware that it was issued as part of the present work which is not included in the extensive appendix of books illustrated by Frost. The present work includes six angling plates three of fly-fishing four plates of game-bird hunting and five of hunting larger game.

Each of the fifteen subjects is first described in general terms on a single leaf of text followed by a second leaf giving a first-hand account of catching or shooting the subject followed by a chromolithograph illustrating the first-hand account. Each plate is archivally matted; the paintings measure 12 x 9-12 inches and are docketed and captioned in pencil in the lower margins. Boyer's Originals. An extremely handsome and decorative set of American sporting notables. The six portraits each set in an appropriate background are of: SAMUEL MORRIS ESQ. Foxhunter first president of the Gloucester Foxhunting Club America's oldest; COL. WILLIAM RANSOM JOHNSON "Napoleon of the Turf"; COL. GEORGE WASHINGTON Foxhunter; COMMODORE JOHN COX STEVENS Yachtsman owner of the "America" and a founder of the New York Yacht Club; THADDEUS NORRIS ESQ. Angler author of The American Angler's Book who did much to elevate and advance the art of fly fishing; HENRY WILLIAM HERBERT ESQ. "Frank Forester" the father of American sporting literature. Boyer's watercolors done in larger size were reduced to edition dimensions of approximately 10 x 8 inches. The proof prints before letters have been reworked by Boyer who has signed each one and show a depth and richness of modelling that the published edition for all its beauty does not. This set was one of the finest productions of The Derrydale Press Sporting Print Series. We believe the set of proofs to be unique and the original paintings are of course unquestionably so. Both have survived in prime condition to delight the collector and historian of the American sporting scene.
A UNIQUE TREASURE OF AMERICAN SPORTING ART. Original brown printed wrappers sewn. Fine short split at bottom of spine fold. Green half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. First edition. 42 original mounted photographs each captioned by hand in ink. Text printed in brown. 20 pp. 1 vols. Folio. 'It's Better Just a Little Farther on'. Bradley was Secretary-Treasurer of the Beaverkill Trout Club from 1910-1929; the club had 43 members at the time of his writing. A brief but detailed section of reminiscences is followed by early photographs of sport along the Beaverkill before World War I including author Geo. M. L. La Branche in mid-cast. Each photograph is titled in a fine hand which Bruns speculates is that of "Lady B." pictured on p. 19. There are also photographs of trout fishing in Maine and other points in New York State and of the author and his friend Charlie Campbell president of the club 1910-1923 fishing for Atlantic salmon in Newfoundland. Campbell was the friend who first brought Bradley to the Voorhees homestead in 1908 and with Bradley formed the Beaverkill Trout Club. Campbell's motto was "It's better just a little farther on". These recollections were evidently composed in 1927 for a speech to fellow members to judge from the text and expanded for publication here.

"A very rare work numbering about 25 copies" Heller.
