The Massachusetts Gazetteer of 1890 said of the town: "Merrimac is a thrifty and attractive manufacturing town situated on the north bank of the Merrimack River. The principle business is carriage making in the different departments of which in numerous shops some 500 men are engaged."<br/>The mid 1800s marked the peak of Merrimac's carriage-making and by 1888 there were nineteen carriage-making shops as well as other companies related to the carriage-making industry. Between 1881 and 1889 Merrimac's carriage factories were making 1500 quality carriages per year. Companies such as J.B. Judkins and Company Loud Brothers and H.G. & H.W. A rare work privately printed listed by Eberstadt in 1953 at $300. "Isbell went to California as a young man by way of Cape Horn in 1852 and from that time until 1870 except for two trips back to his home in Connecticut he hunted or worked in the mines of California and Idaho. He learned fairly soon that hunting could often be more profitable than working as a miner though in the end he seems to have accumulated quite a stake from mining. He tells some great hunting stories and his account of life in Idaho where he went after hearing about the gold discoveries there in 1862 is most interesting" - Streeter. "One of the more sought of western narratives" - Eberstadt. 1900188011900. Women SPORTS Six action shots of a women's fencing dual in the early 1900s. 4" x 6" each. Stereoview on cardboard mount. N.p. Captioned "Le Duel" with each photograph numbered. Historically fencing has been primarily a men's sport and though women have been fencing for hundreds of years there was still heavy stigma against women taking up any sport. After WWI many French fencing schools opened up classes for women to grow their economy. This act opened up the doors for women to eventually be allowed to fence in the Olympics in 1924. This set of six stereoviews showcase two women fencers with a female referee and a group of female viewers. Each stereoview is numbered in the order of the duel; the first shows the two women facing each other with their swords down the second and third show the women mid duel and the last three show the victor heralding over the defeated opponent with two women side by side helping her recover. Minor wear to edges some sunning and wear to photos. Overall only good condition. unknown
