She won 31 Grand Slam titles during her career 2 Olympic gold medals and was the Wimbledon champion a record-setting 8 times record unbroken until 1990. In 1933 forty years before the "Battle of the Sexes" match in which Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in an exhibition game Helen Wills defeated Phil Neer then the #8 nationally ranked male tennis player in the US. This issue of Time featuring Wills across the cover was the same year as the "Match of the Century" wherein Wills then ranked #2 in the world faced Suzanne Lengdon the #1 ranked French star. Signed in black marker "To Ray Kenter with Best Wishes Althea". Gibson became the first African-American to compete at the U.S. National Championships. Gibson had a jam-packed eight-year career with all of her major championships coming from 1956 to 1958 when she appeared in a stunning 19 major finals and won 11 titles including single and doubles championships at the Australian Open French Open Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals. Gibson was the first non-white woman to win a major tennis championship and only one other woman of color had claimed this honor until Serena Williams won the US Open in 1999. At the height of her career she was ranked No. 1 tennis player in the world; after she retired from tennis Gibson became the first African-American to compete on the women's professional golf tour in 1960. unknown books

A male foursome in shirtsleeves plays this outdoor racquet game a precursor of tennis while spectators look on. Tennis in France evolved from a game played with the bare hand to one where the hand was protected. This gave way at an early date to the hand-held strung racquet and the game divided into a version played indoor "jeu de courte paume" short tennis which developed into court tennis and one played outdoors "jeu de longue paume" long tennis pictured in this plate.
