br. 20 luglio 1937, centrale di Wimbledon, finale interzone di Coppa Davis. Davanti a quattordicimila spettatori, il barone von Cramm affronta Donald Budge in una partita che segnerà la storia di questo sport. La Seconda guerra mondiale è ormai alle porte, l'arroganza nazista miete le prime vittime e molti percepiscono che quello che sta per giocarsi non è solo un incontro di tennis: è Stati Uniti contro Germania, libertà contro regime, il bene contro il male. Budge, giovane e arrembante, "guance rosa confetto", gioca per il suo paese e per la gloria sportiva, von Cramm - il "sofisticato aristocratico", l'elegantissimo atleta-eroe, il modello per la gioventù tedesca - intimidito dalla Gestapo e da una telefonata di Hitler pochi minuti prima dell'inizio del match gioca per sé stesso, per la sua vita. "Era Hitler, voleva augurarmi buona fortuna" dirà a Budge e al cerimoniere. A guardarli c'è Bill Tilden, il più famoso e chiacchierato tennista del tempo, l'americano amico dei divi, l'"intellettuale" che più o meno segretamente allena la squadra tedesca. Von Cramm appare teso, il volto è meno luminoso del solito. Eppure il suo inizio è fulminante. Dopo poco più di un'ora conduce per due set a zero. La rimonta di Budge però non si fa attendere, fino all'estenuante quinto set. Raccontare lo sport è raccontare gli uomini, ed eventi come questa partita perdurano, dando l'impressione che la storia è sempre lì in attesa di manifestarsi in tutto il suo terribile splendore.
