194674245Rockford IL: Album Photo Service 1946. This is an unusual little photograph album. It is comprised of 51 original photographs of a hunting expedition via dog sled in the Yukon and Alaska. The photographs measure 6 x 3 3/4 inches but for three smaller ones. They are numbered on the back and there is a typed sheet laid in giving title for all the photographs. Housed in a pinned binding of blue wrappers. The wrappers advertise the developing company Artisto Snapshots; Album Photo service Rockford Illinois and are merely what the developing company used to house their photographs. Wrppaers with edge ching by the photographs are all very nice. The list of captions state there were 56 photographs but the album only contains 51. Perhaps the last few didn't come out as well as hoped. They all detail a hunting trip by a group of men using dog sleds as transportation so naturally there are a fair number of photographs dealing with the teams. They were somewhat successful as we have pictures of a downed brown bear and a Moose. There are also numerous photographs of interest aside from the hunting aspect; Dawson City aerial view; a man displaying a giant rack of pelts; Ice break-up on the Mackenzie; Norman Wells; Indian canoe; Road and Pipeline near Canol; Refinery near Whitehorse; Teslin River etc. A fun and unique piece. Album Photo Service unknown
18479675n.p. 1847. 1 vols. Folio. Sewn into original brown wrappers worn. 1 vols. Folio. The artist from internal evidence seems to be Rev. H.L. Bennet--clearly an ardent and well-connected sportsman as most of his sketches are portraits and caricatures of well-known hunting men and women of the day many of whom are identified. These include a portrait of Lord Jersey who Nimrod called "perhaps the most elegant rider for hounds the world has ever seen" and many others. The drawings are skilfully executed and are often amusing. A unique production of one of the golden ages of British sport.

Including : Examples of 2 pages 7 images: Mrs. Rowley's Groom on his Compact Mare Rush Esq Farthgghoc Col. 176712978N.p. Colonial America 1767. 1 vols. 8-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches. Some stains old folds some cracking but all present and attractive overall. 1 vols. 8-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches. An intriguing document written in various hands on fine laid paper on which appears to be a French watermark of an elaborate cartouche over the words "V. Guerevin". It is titled "Advertisement" and reads: "This is to Give notes to all Persons that we the subscribers do forworn all Persons from hunting with Gun or Dogs on our Lands / August ye 6th 1767" Below this are the signatures of 15 individuals four of whom unable to sign have made their mark on the document under their name. Among the legible names are those of Laurence Riley William Abbott Lener Thomas Dutten Richard Von Cade James Reed Edward Stevenson John Jouller John Abbott Dennis Morris Jacob Morris Mary Morris Woolma Donovan Foster Donovan.

Although there is no indication of where this document originated we believe it to have been in the American Colonies--possibly in view of the names in the area around New York. While the posting of individual property was and is commonplace it is highly unusual to find a group doing so collectively and this would most likely happen if each of the holdings was relatively small. The nature of the notice suggests that the properties were contiguous and were probably farmland. In the England of the day the number of small independent farmers owning contiguous property was not large--small farmers usually worked as tenants to a large landowner who typically enjoyed hunting and shooting over his estates. In addition it was far more common in America than in England for members of the same family to have land adjacent or in proximity to one another as may have been the case above with the Morrises and Donovans. Small farmers were the backbone of Colonial America and this document is a tribute to their spirit of enterprise and independence which was soon to come to fruition in another form.

A UNIQUE AND FASCINATING DOCUMENT AND A RARE ITEM OF COLONIAL AMERICANA. unknown
8327New York: Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute. First Edition. Original wraps. Very Good. 5X7 Inches.20 PP. Archive of EIGHT "Shooting's Fun For Everyone" booklets including the original 1957 first issue. While it may seem unfamiliar to us today the America of the 1950's included gun-wielding children in every state. Children were introduced to guns and gun ownership at a very early age. Most schools including those in New York City had pistol and rifle shooting competitions and clubs in the 1950's. Up until 1969 most New York City High Schools had a shooting club; students competed in shooting competitions and the federal government paid for rifles and ammunition. The New York City schools quietly phased out their shooting programs during the 1970s. These early comic-style brochures were marketed for sale to gun retailers as well as manufacturing companies. They were distributed as part of a national decades long campaign to entice children to gun ownership.

The first year production run of this booklet contained no blank box on the rear cover for advertisement. This was altered in coming years and many of these booklets located today are from local government offices and gun retailers as well as manufacturers.

This archive contains:

1957 VG example of this first year booklet
1958 VG / blank back
1958 VG / Winchester & Western Rifle advertisement
1958 VG / Deputy Game Protector - Tamaqua PA
1959 VG / blank back
1962 GOOD / blank back
1966 VG / blank back
1967 VG / blank back.
