Photographs in excellent condition. Overall very good. A substantial and perhaps unique collection of large format photographs chronicling a 1946 hunting trip in British Columbia. The photographs are not captioned and no informational text is present. There are numerous striking landscape photos as well as many featuring a small group of men and women and their guides in camp on horseback and showing off their trophies which include rams bears fowl goats and a number of other animals. The guides or helpers who can be seen in several photographs appear to be Native American or of Native American descent. <br> <br> Usually albums of this nature are comprised of vernacular photographs taken by a member of the traveling party; however the composition of the photographs here and their unusually large size and clarity seem to indicate an experienced amateur or professional photographer. Also such an album would likely have been a unique production or one of a very small number of copies made for the members of the hunting trip. In any case it is a beautiful production capturing the majesty of the Canadian wilderness in the mid-20th century. hardcover books

Bennet--clearly an ardent and well-connected sportsman as most of his sketches are portraits and caricatures of well-known hunting men and women of the day many of whom are identified. These include a portrait of Lord Jersey who Nimrod called "perhaps the most elegant rider for hounds the world has ever seen" and many others. The drawings are skilfully executed and are often amusing. An Early American Manuscript Posting Announcement. An intriguing document written in various hands on fine laid paper on which appears to be a French watermark of an elaborate cartouche over the words "V. Guerevin". It is titled "Advertisement" and reads: "This is to Give notes to all Persons that we the subscribers do forworn all Persons from hunting with Gun or Dogs on our Lands / August ye 6th 1767" Below this are the signatures of 15 individuals four of whom unable to sign have made their mark on the document under their name. Among the legible names are those of Laurence Riley William Abbott Lener Thomas Dutten Richard Von Cade James Reed Edward Stevenson John Jouller John Abbott Dennis Morris Jacob Morris Mary Morris Woolma Donovan Foster Donovan.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Although there is no indication of where this document originated we believe it to have been in the American Colonies--possibly in view of the names in the area around New York. While the posting of individual property was and is commonplace it is highly unusual to find a group doing so collectively and this would most likely happen if each of the holdings was relatively small. The nature of the notice suggests that the properties were contiguous and were probably farmland. In the England of the day the number of small independent farmers owning contiguous property was not large--small farmers usually worked as tenants to a large landowner who typically enjoyed hunting and shooting over his estates. In addition it was far more common in America than in England for members of the same family to have land adjacent or in proximity to one another as may have been the case above with the Morrises and Donovans. Small farmers were the backbone of Colonial America and this document is a tribute to their spirit of enterprise and independence which was soon to come to fruition in another form.<br/><br/>A UNIQUE AND FASCINATING DOCUMENT AND A RARE ITEM OF COLONIAL AMERICANA. unknown books

In praise of three California huntresses. A charming tribute with subtle overtures from three Swedish bachelors living in Mexico to three California sisters whose hunting prowess was described in an article in the "Mexican Herald." Headlined "Three California Dianas. They Kill Bears and Panthers and Olive in Particular is an Expert Shot" the article describes the sisters who live in the "wilderness above Ukiah California" as "sportswomen of rare talent" and gives an account of their encounter with a bear which ends up with their treeing and killing the animal. The letter reads in part: ".we think it would interest you to know that your bravery and pluck are known even outside your own Country . We have read and reread the article and . we could not restrain ourselves from sending our respects. Down here you would find a great field for your guns. We have all kinds of big game . it is nothing unusual to meet an 8 or 9 feet sic tiger on the roads when we are out riding. We will described one of our hunting experiences that might interest you." The letter goes on to relate how after wounding and trailing a deer towards a lagoon "a big Puma jumped out from the jungle and pounced upon our poor wounded deer. A rifleshot and we had both deer and Puma." The letter continues: "We are three Swedes 26 28 & 31 years old and run a fruit plantation in partnership in the district of Huasteca on the shores of the beautiful Panuco river. We have been here only 5 months but we have found the prospects for the future very bright. We would greatly enjoy a few lines from you as to ascertain whether our epistle ever reached you . and if the article is a ghost-story or not." There are images of men with fishing rods and rifles and dead bears crabs fish moose and seals. Some photographs show the men inside the cabin relaxing reading sleeping and cooking. There are also photographs of the early planes that brought tourists Alaskan scenery and small Alaskan towns. 1870D11031England 1870s. Hardcover. Very Good. England Kent and Norfolk counties: c. 1871-1874. 8vo 175 x 115mm; 61 numbered pages in the hand of Charles W. Prescott detailing his various hunting excursions around the Kent countryside. Prescotts ownership inscription on front free-endpaper is dated 1871. His entries are easily read and cover Prescotts adventures on hunting hares with a skulk of foxes writing Found another in the same field ran her straight back to Old Park round the pond and the pack hunted her beautifully . Dec. 16 1871. The hunts took place over sprawling village and countryside or as he describes hop-gardens hills and ploughs of land in the Herne Bay area of Kent England. Many entries are headed by recognizable locations; Stroud Park Broomfield Hilsborough Wolston Heath and Chislet Mill and are dated with month and sometimes year. Only a portion of the way full his entries span about three years the first dated: Oct. 19 71 Stroud Park and last March 25 1874. Contemporary black morocco marbled endpapers and marbled endpapers with original brass clasp faint splitting at lower hinge of first few leaves strengthened at endpapers corners rubbed otherwise in very good shape especially considering it was wielded around so much of the Kentish countryside. Prescott makes many personal anecdotes about his day noting things in his surroundings like scent moderate or adding his opinions we could not kill I think we should have but the sun was too hot. Prescott often ends the entries with jotting down the days weather as something like very indifferent but as good as could be expected with a very cold east wind or simply stating Frost. It is evident from Prescotts personal asides that he was a vigilant huntsman quite dedicated to the task. Further personal glimpses reveal a record of his horses charming names including Salt Fish and Molly Malone. At the time Prescott was taking these notes Herne Bay area and the Kentish villages would have been teeming with people. The Victoria era was one of prosperity when elite English folk flocked to popular destinations to partake in their favorite pastimes. From 1873 on in the journal Prescott notes he was hunting with Pytchley by writing their name in parentheses. The Pytchley hunt is an organization originally based in Northamptonshire in formation as early at the 1630s. The organization is still active today. Pytchleys website notes that from 1819-1873 right as Prescott began with Pytchley for one year the Althorp and Pytchley countries were hunted by one pack with a second pack established at Brigstock. Prescott was part of the famous hunt organization at a time when it was amid significant change and expansion. His notes may keep further clue of such growth. While the huntsman himself may be unknown to history the anecdotal evidence in Prescotts diary gives us a glimpse of the Victorian man fond of his sport. <br/><br/> hardcover books
