large 8vo [26.5 x 18 cm]; [vi], x [i] 408 pp, frontis, plus 60 plates, folding map partly colored at end (short tear at stub), index, title page printed in red and black. original decorated cloth, gilt spine title lettering, top edge gilted, cover lightly rubbed, interior near fine and clean copy, signed by author on the half title plage. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Wilson was one of the prime botanical collectors in China and Japan in the early 1900's, introducing many species. Besides his descriptions of the plants he found, including some fascinating adventures in little explored places, he describes the geography, the native peoples and tribes, temples, timber trees, cultivated gardens and fruits, agriculture plant products, tea and tea-yielding plants, etc, during his extensive explorations, including Szechuan, Ancient Kingdom of Pa, Sungpan Ting, the Chino-Tibetan border area, Tachienly, Omei Shan, Laolin. 'He crossed the Laolin from north to south, probably the only European to have done so' [Coats - The Plant Hunters, p. 120]. There is also a much more common unsigned edition printed at the same time.

A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The author collected 800 species and 10,000 specimens, of which he estimates 100 are new to science. He traveled extensively through eastern Persia and Afghanistan in 1184 and 1885 and describes the vegetation, his itinerary and the plants he collected.

8vo., First Edition thus[?], with engraved frontispiece, engraved and printed titles, 3 engraved plates, and four engraved head-and-tail vignettes (one for each section of the work), some mild age-staining as usual, last leaf of text wanting upper outer corner (with loss of half a dozen words); handsomely bound in contemporary green full roan, boards with double gilt frame border enclosing elaborate blind frame within which sits a decorative gilt rectangle, backstrip elaborately tooled in gilt with with black leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, gilt doublures, red sprinkled edges, green endpapers, a most attractive copy. The plates (one of which is placed as frontispiece) and head-pieces are by Sartorius and engraved by Scott. Some of the tail-pieces are signed 'Austin'. This copy was presented by A.H. Cowie to his friend E.W. Hermon with the former's inscription 'J. Cundee, the publisher of this book was my grand uncle and the original oil paintings by Sartorius were in my family till a few years ago'. Somervile's famous blank verse poem was first published in 1735, its successor 'Field Sports' in 1742. VERY SCARCE.

Rousseurs éparses. L'un des grand textes consacrés à la Vénerie. L'auteur, écuyer et seigneur d'Amigny, composa ce texte paru à l'origine en 1763. La présente édition reprend celle de 1778, reproduisant la "remarquable introduction" et remplaçant les traités "des remèdes" et du "Droit de suite" par des traités similaires, mis à jour. Il comprend huit parties sur la chasse des différents gibiers : Le sanglier, (moyens de tuer le sanglier avec le limier, quête du sanglier, jugement des traces, etc.) ; le cerf ; le daim ; le chevreuil le loup ; le renard, le blaireau et la loutre. Un chapitre traite des maladies des chiens, la législation, ainsi que le vocabulaire des principaux termes de chasse.
