It is titled "Advertisement" and reads: "This is to Give notes to all Persons that we the subscribers do forworn all Persons from hunting with Gun or Dogs on our Lands / August ye 6th 1767" Below this are the signatures of 15 individuals four of whom unable to sign have made their mark on the document under their name. Among the legible names are those of Laurence Riley William Abbott Lener Thomas Dutten Richard Von Cade James Reed Edward Stevenson John Jouller John Abbott Dennis Morris Jacob Morris Mary Morris Woolma Donovan Foster Donovan.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Although there is no indication of where this document originated we believe it to have been in the American Colonies--possibly in view of the names in the area around New York. While the posting of individual property was and is commonplace it is highly unusual to find a group doing so collectively and this would most likely happen if each of the holdings was relatively small. The nature of the notice suggests that the properties were contiguous and were probably farmland. In the England of the day the number of small independent farmers owning contiguous property was not large--small farmers usually worked as tenants to a large landowner who typically enjoyed hunting and shooting over his estates. In addition it was far more common in America than in England for members of the same family to have land adjacent or in proximity to one another as may have been the case above with the Morrises and Donovans. Small farmers were the backbone of Colonial America and this document is a tribute to their spirit of enterprise and independence which was soon to come to fruition in another form.<br /> <br /> A UNIQUE AND FASCINATING DOCUMENT AND A RARE ITEM OF COLONIAL AMERICANA. unknown

Minor abrasion with slight tear to upper part of engraving. A wonderful scene by John Nost Sartorius illustrating a late 18th century British fox hunt in rich clear engravings by J. Neagle and J. Peltro. Plate IV shows the bad/good culmination of the hunt one's opinion depending on whose side one takes - the hunters or the hunted as the team of riders and excited hounds have captured the fox. The differing expressions on the riders' faces are fascinating. The accompanying lines of verse from William Somerville's 'The Chase' 1735 read as follows: "A chosen few / Alone the sport enjoy nor droop beneath / Their pleasing toils. The unerring hounds / With peals of echoing vengeance close pursue. / Listen! now they are at him again. Now Reynard / Look to yourself. It is just up with him. / What a crash they make; the whole wood resounds. / That turn was very short. There now; / Aye; now they have him. Who-hoop. Further inscription reads: 'To Charles Boldero Esqr of Aspeden Hall Herts. This Print is dedicated by his much obliged and obedient Servant John Harris.' 1710375AG1710. Cambridge c. 1710. Original copper engraving hand-coloured. 41 x 21 cm. Minor lesions to left outer margins. Small defect to left side of the engraving. A stunning example of Blome's famous Hunting Treats in beautiful handcolouring. Beautifully framed. Richard Blome 1635-1705 was a publisher and cartographer from the Kingdom of England. Richard Blome's cartography flourished in the second half of the seventeenth century. He produced a great amount of maps but none were original and he was often accused of plagiarism although usually made no attempt to hide his sources. His maps were attractive and quaintly designed and they still retain their nostalgic look. Blome's series of county maps were combined in the Britannia based on the latest editions of mapmaker John Speed and was published in 1673 but was not a success. It was followed in 1681 by an issue of smaller maps entitled Speed's Maps Epitomiz'd. Most of his work was engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar Richard Palmer and Francis Lamb and embellished with dedications to county dignitaries which were added or omitted in later editions. Housed in custom red cloth folder with green morocco lettering-piece armorial bookplate of Gloucester to front flap. A trifle creased scattered foxing early ink date to text of first page of text. Armorial bookplate to verso of upper wrapper of Charles Francis George Richard Schwerdt 1862-1939 who's extensive collection of books manuscripts prints and drawings relating to hunting hawking and shooting was sold after his death in a series of sales at Sotheby's 22nd May 1939-11th March 1946. A remarkably rare survival of the first edition of an anonymous impassioned polemical pamphlet defending the practice of hunting following an article within the Monthly Review for September 1781 that had labelled all those who partook in in the sport as 'barbarians'. The Monthly Review published a rather excoriating response in their July issue for 1782 Vol. LXVII. The imprint giving the place of publication as 'Spitzbergen' is clearly spurious perhaps a thinly-veiled rather puerile jest OCLC records two copies at the British Library and none elsewhere.
