Farrer was one of the most important plant hunters of his time and introduced hundreds of plants to the west that we now take for granted in our gardens (see Coats, The Plant Hunters, p. 132, etc). Farrer collected plants extensively in Kansu, Burma, Ahkyang Valley, and elsewhere. Cox, a plant hunter of merit also, had accompanied Farrer on one of his expeditions in Asia, became a popular gardening writer of the time, and here provides a detailed introduction to Farrer's travels and edited his notes on each plant described. This work lists 1920 plants that Farrer collected, which had been named up to that point. Farrer's descriptions of each plant are augmented by Cox's comments.

19973174Agoura CA: Trophy Room Books 1997. First Limited to 1000 Copies. Hardcover. New/New. 290 pp. Over 100 ill. Foreword by Marc Pechenart. Make room on your shelf for a new classic. There are more photos of 100-lb elephant trophies in this book than in most others. This is the incredible autobiography of an intrepid hunter. The author was himself hunted during WWII and twice escaped back to his native France before heading for western Africa and then Central Africa. He was more like a John Boyes than a mere hunter. One of his favorite sayings: anything that does not deserve a .470 is not worth hunting; when in a dangerous situation make your mind up quickly and move your butt even more so. Tre-Hardy was selected as personal PH to most French Presidents that visited Central Africa during his career. It is both an excellent account of a hunting life in post WWII Colonial Africa and there are many serious jumbos hunted between the covers of this tome. It is beautifully written and well above the ordinary. It will be enjoyed by all who want to stalk an amazing assortment of huge ivory as well as getting a very interesting look at adventure from all "those British chaps." An absorbing work.
