The book is written in the transliterated English letters of the Dakota language. Book Condition: VG maybe Near Fine; from what can be seen under the hand-made Indian book cover. No DJ. Black boards and spine with gilt lettering on spine and embossed cross on the front board. The book has a hand-made bead dyed porcupine quill and animal hide book cover that slips over the boards; has stitched leather closure on the front and Millie written on the spine. This is very likely turn of the century genuine Indian work. There is no foxing; the hinges are not split; the boards are not worn; there is no marking on the pages; there is no moisture damage. This book contains in the Dakota language the following subjects; The Christian Year; The Communion of Saints; the Church; The Sacraments; Offices of the Church; Missions and Charities; Special Seasons; Redemption; The Christian Life; The Judgment; Heaven and Miscellaneous. Engraved broadside with various images of the attempted assassination and of female representatives of the various virtues with ornate calligraphy by David Hare. Very rare. 45.5 x 35cm.Missing part of blank lower margin' tears in other blank margins. .On August 2 1786 Margaret Nicholson attempted to assassinate King George III with a dessert knife at St. James's Palace but the blade broke on her second thrust. The king escaped unharmed reportedly stating "The poor creature is mad; do not hurt her!". Nicholson was declared insane and confined to Bedlam. The Incident: Nicholson 36 approached King George III as he arrived at the palace pretending to present a petition before lunging with an ivory-handled knife. The "Guardian": The "guardian angel" was effectively the King's own composure and physically the immediate action of the palace attendants who tackled Nicholson before she could cause injury. Aftermath: The attack a major news event led to depictions of the scene by artists like Robert Dighton. Margaret Nicholson: She was committed to Bethlehem Hospital Bedlam where she remained until her death in 1828 becoming a figure in literature. London: Carington Bowles, December, 1786. unknown

Binding bright gilt crisp with only minor wear at extremities; an unusually well-preserved example in original boards.<br /> <br /> A beautifully conceived decorative suite representing the twelve months.<br /> <br /> The twelve hand-colored lithographs are conceived as intimate seasonal vignettes each centered on young children engaged in quiet domestic or outdoor activities appropriate to the month. Rather than formal allegorical figures <br /> Lièvre presents scenes of childhood observation and gentle narrative - reading tending resting or playing - imbued with a sense of calm order and refinement.<br /> <br /> The children are depicted in elegant period costume their gestures natural and unforced often set within carefully rendered interiors or garden settings. Each composition balances figure and environment with subtle attention to furnishings textiles and seasonal detail reflecting Lièvre's background as a designer in the decorative arts.<br /> <br /> The coloring is delicate and restrained favoring soft tonal washes over bold saturation lending the series a unified atmospheric quality. Attractive manuscript children's book filled with watercolor illustrations.<br /><br />A whimsical story in verse about a carefree itinerant fellow and his dog set in the early twentieth century wandering the towns of southern England before finding and then losing untold riches in Canterbury - and learning that time and leisure are more valuable than money.<br /><br />This book appears to be unpublished as we trace no printed version of any variation of this title by this author or illustrators.<br /><br />Oblong 4to. 7 leaves. Clearly a work of love as it is bound in full vellum with gilt lettering and marbled endpapers.</p>

Published 3 years after the death of British writer John Sterling 1806-1844 at age 38 these two volumes contain much of his output as well as a memoir of his life by Charles Hare. Included are most of his fantasy tales among which are the novella The Onyx Ring five of the fantasy tales that were imbedded in the novel Arthur Coningsby and the longer short story "A Chronicle of England" which Murray Ewing describes as "a delightful fairy-haunted picture of England in the days before it received its first human inhabitants." John Sterling had long languished in obscurity but today he is hailed by many as an important progenitor of fantastical literature. In the Encyclopedia of Fantasy John Clute and John Grant argue that Sterling has to be considered "the most significant UK pioneer of fantasy." In The Dedalus Book of British Fantasy: The 19th Century Brian Stableford states: Sterling would surely have become one of the leading writers of his day had he not died so young and he might well have become the most important nineteenth century fantasy writer; his prose fantasies are more various and more adventurous than any other contemporary work. Very good condition: both volumes are clean and tight with some rubbing along edges of covers and spine. There is a Bloomingdales price sticker affixed to the verso of the front free endpaper in each volume. Rare: WorldCat locates only 5 copies in libraries worldwide. First Edition. Hardcover.
