Marvin praises its completeness: "It professes to be a complete Treatise upon Discovery; it comprises almost all the authorities upon the subject with accurate investigations into many practical points. It is a work to which the practitioner may refer with every prospect of finding a perfect explanation of any difficulties which he may have encountered. Indeed it has still higher merits. Morocco book label of Julius Wangenheim 1866-1942 a San Diego banker civic leader and bibliophile who became interested during the last twenty years of his life in developing a collection that would show the history of the book. A bright copy with some fraying at the top of the spine panel and light foxing throughout. With the ownership signature of Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch son of the better known mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch on the title page and dated 1842. Cloth. Nathaniel I. Bowditch was Vice President of the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1856-1862. Townshend was a skeptic later a supporter of animal magnetism. The first edition was London 1840 with the title "Facts in Mesmerism With Reasons for a Dispassionate Inquiry Into it" and went through a number of editions. Robert H. Collyer has added an appendix "Report of the Boston Committee on Animal Magnetism as Exhibited by Dr. Robert H. Collyer" to this edition "First American Edition" as stated on the title page There was also a Harper and Brothers edition in 1841 with a page count of 388 pages. Half-title title page and some text printed in red and black Arranged in chronological order the collection of vibrant printed color plates traces a history of decoration and ornament including textiles ceramics glass wood and metal. This work was an important during the preparation of the Paris Exhibition in 1878 being a highly influential publication in dispersing Japanese and Eastern styles as inspiration for Impressionism and Art Nouveau. The author a cabinet maker and decorator is noted for his Wardrobe "Japanese style" that was sold at 2.036 million pounds sterling at auction at Bonhams London in Dec. 12 2008 beating the world record for a piece of furniture of the 19th century. Features engraved examples of ornately carved furniture including a 16th century armoire with flamboyantly carved panels from the Louvre and an 18th century console with clock and vases from the collection of M. Leopold Double. Uunder the surface of this elegant console sits a cherub clasping a crown with a wreath of laurels and myrtles above. Also included is a Renaissance bed from the collection of the museum of l'Hotel de Cluny.
