Thiebaud en col. 539 signale une première édition de cet ouvrage en 1771 et donne quelques éléments de biographie de l'auteur : "livre célèbre à juste titre, unique en son genre. Labruyerre est né en 1723 (...) Braconnier fameux, après avoir été enfermé deux fois à Bicêtre pour délits de braconnage, il devint garde du Comte de Clermont. Il révèle dans son ouvrage les secrets de sa première profession". Il fut édité une seconde fois en 1857. Notre présente édition est la troisième et fut tiré "à petit nombre".
