Contains two large format studio prints and 82 glossy gelatin silver prints laid into double-sided paper sleeves with cut-out rectangular frames. Neatly captioned throughout in ink on the paper sleeves. Owner's name: "J.E.C. Partridge" in ink on front cover. Boards are a little darkened and rubbed a few prints are faded very good.<br /> <br /> A notable album of images compiled by Lieutenant J.E.C. "Birdie" Partridge an officer in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers and founder of the British Army Rugby Union ARU in 1906. The album documents the activities of Partridge's militia unit throughout South Africa during the Boer War. The unit is identified as the "46th R.E.". Included are images of the militia and several R.E. officers on the march and performing various duties and at leisure at various camps. Also included are images of Boer farms and families and Boer prisoners at Cape Town.<br /> <br /> Partridge was promoted to lieutenant in March 1901 and he represented South African rugby teams during the Boer war when he was serving there. After the war he became a prominent international rugby union player and founded the Army Rugby Union. The album likely includes more than one image of Partridge in particular in one print of an "X-mas dinner 1901". A well-preserved historically important collection of images. hardcover

19216801Oakland: Roi Partridge 1921 Original etching on steel-faced copper. 6 7/8 x 61/8 inches impression. Black ink on laid rag paper. Signed and dated within the plate at lower right Roi Partridge 1921. A very fine example expertly framed and glazed. A wonderful example of this artist's work. Unlike many of his etchings which are bold and rather abstract Lone Pine is delicate and detailed and is one of a total edition of 65 impressions. The plate was then canceled. The etching is signed in pencil at the center of the lower margin "Roi Partridge." Roi George Partridge was born in Washington Territory in 1888. In 1909 the budding artist traveled to New York City for one year of art study at the National Academy of Design followed by studies in etching in Munich under Brockhoff. Partridge's next three years were spent in Paris where he worked as a printmaker. He returned to Seattle in 1914 and in 1915 forty-four of his etchings were shown at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. At this point Partridge decided to make California his home and moved to San Francisco in 1917. He began teaching at Mills College in Oakland in 1920 and became the first director of the school's art gallery. His first marriage was to the famed photographer Imogen Cunningham. Partridge continued etching until his retirement in 1954. He had achieved international recognition as one of America's greatest artists specializing almost exclusively in the art of etching. Partridge held memberships in the National Academy of Design California Society of Etchers; Chicago Society of Etchers San Francisco Art Association and more. He won medals at various exhibitions including the National Academy of Design 1910 Art Institute of Chicago 1921 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1922 Mills College 1930 etc. Partridge's work is held in many institutional collections including the National Museum of American Art Oakland Museum De Young Museum San Francisco Museum of Art the California State Library San Diego Museum Los Angeles County Museum and on and on. Eight volumes bound in one sixteenmo size 384 pp. A collection of almanacs from the year 1785 with a lovely scenic fore-edge painting which shows a road leading to a lake containing two boats some buildings reminscent of castles or villas in the background and two trees on each side whose branches reach towards each other in the middle. Contents are varied and unusual and include poetry proverbs answers to philisophical and critical questions answers to enigmas monthly observations descriptions of the planets and zodiac chronologies of remarkable occurrences eclipses astrological prognostications chapters from "The Surprising Story of the Witch of the Woodlands" and the usual tables and charts relating to the moon stars sun planets tides birthdays of the royal family terms and returns weight of coins and calendars among many other interesting trifles.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Contemporary polished red calf with decorative gilt-panel borders to both boards four raised bands and backstrip stamped in gilt all edges gilt fore-edge painting marbled endpapers title-pages printed in red and black red price-stamp to each title-page numerous engravings tables charts and mathematic equations in text; sixteenmo size 6.5" by 4" each almanac is paginated separately each is 48 pp. first editions as per usual.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Near fine overall the leather boards bright in colour and supple text block is tight/square with solid hinges internally lightly toned with some scattered foxing the fore-edge painting details clear; two leaves with short tears at the gutter margin title pages of "The Gentleman's Diary" and "Old Poor Robin" some of the paint from the fore-edge painting has stained the outer margins of some leaves none obscure text spine somewhat sunned and professional restoration has been applied to the joints. A wonderful original set of two handwritten letters dated 1998 to Vita Sackville-West's bibliographer. In addition an original photograph Inscribed on the verso by Frances Partridge. Her death in 2004 at the great age of 103 closed a remarkable chapter in English literary life. Her friendships with Virginia and Leonard Woolf Lytton Strachey Dora Carrington David Garnett her brother-inlaw are vividly chronicled in her memoirs and would have assured her own immortality. They married Blooms did a had children and friends and so they have got into quite a clan. The contents are well-illustrated and include sections on the general principles of electrical technology legal and regulatory issues and technical details of applications like lighting heating cooking and laundry.<br /><br />Though edited by Haslett the book's main author was electrical engineer Margaret Partridge 1891-1967 who began her career as a munitions worker during the First World War then founded her own firm M. Partridge & Co. Domestic Engineers. 'The new company focused on providing lighting and electric power for farm and country houses. In 1922 she put on an exhibition of electric models and machines in Exeter including a range of labour-saving devices aimed at women in the home. It was predicted that her exhibition would "stir up the women of Exeter to demand the installation of electricity"' The Woman Engineer col. 1 no. 17 1923.
