Eight volumes bound in one sixteenmo size 384 pp. A collection of almanacs from the year 1785 with a lovely scenic fore-edge painting which shows a road leading to a lake containing two boats some buildings reminscent of castles or villas in the background and two trees on each side whose branches reach towards each other in the middle. Contents are varied and unusual and include poetry proverbs answers to philisophical and critical questions answers to enigmas monthly observations descriptions of the planets and zodiac chronologies of remarkable occurrences eclipses astrological prognostications chapters from "The Surprising Story of the Witch of the Woodlands" and the usual tables and charts relating to the moon stars sun planets tides birthdays of the royal family terms and returns weight of coins and calendars among many other interesting trifles.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Contemporary polished red calf with decorative gilt-panel borders to both boards four raised bands and backstrip stamped in gilt all edges gilt fore-edge painting marbled endpapers title-pages printed in red and black red price-stamp to each title-page numerous engravings tables charts and mathematic equations in text; sixteenmo size 6.5" by 4" each almanac is paginated separately each is 48 pp. first editions as per usual.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Near fine overall the leather boards bright in colour and supple text block is tight/square with solid hinges internally lightly toned with some scattered foxing the fore-edge painting details clear; two leaves with short tears at the gutter margin title pages of "The Gentleman's Diary" and "Old Poor Robin" some of the paint from the fore-edge painting has stained the outer margins of some leaves none obscure text spine somewhat sunned and professional restoration has been applied to the joints. Bound in a full dark-leather as well and includes bright gilt-design and lettering along the front panel and spine respectively. A bit of light scuffing to the panels and light wear along the spine ends. Still though solidly VG to VG and very presentable. Thick octavo 804 pgs.
