1991998Y41Salisbury : Perdix Press 1991. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. 8.5" by 5.5". None. A wonderful signed presentation copy of this enlightening account of printing and publishing with an endearing letter from the author. The author's presentation copy of this book. With a signed and dated inscription above the frontispiece and a loosely inserted letter from the author. The letter and book are both addressed to a figure named Gordon who is clearly a close acquaintance judging off of the author's letter which jokingly makes light of an "error" in his "blue pencil poem" and finishes by stating "Off to Scotland for a week tomorrow by coach. Easy. No problems".First edition. With the publisher's unclipped dust wrapper. A delightful account of 65 years in printing and publishing as told by master printer and "journeyman" Walter Partridge. The memoirs include fascinating portraits of his equally artistic friends and a vivid sketch of his craft beginning with boyhood as a printer's devil in Yorkshire. The final publication of the author's private press Perdix Press. Also loosely inserted is a review on the book published in Printing World December 1991. In the original cloth binding. With the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally fine. Dust wrapper is lovely with only a hint of bumping to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Author's inscription above frontispiece. Fine Perdix Press hardcover

19671301London: Macmillan & Sons 1967. 1st Edition. BOUND FIRST EDITION full volume of the first tentative measurement of a CMB anisotropy a slightly elevated temperature in the direction of a known quasar cluster. Wilkinson & Partridge's paper presents results "which appear to set rather stringent limits on the magnitude of possible density inhomogeneities in the universe" Wilkinson and Partridge 1967 719. ALSO included is Nicholas Shackleton's reassessment of Emiliani's conclusions from his 1966 analysis of the oxygen isotope ratios in Caribbean cores as an indicator of variations in total volume of glacier ice sheets.

WILKINSON: "The CMB radiation is a direct relic of the early universe. It is a unique and deep probe of both the thermal history of the early universe and the primordial perturbations in the matter distribution" Tuluie "Cosmic Microwave Background" AJ 1996 15. Following "the discovery of the CMB early work focused on putting constraints on the isotropy of the radiation field: that would be an important part of establishing its cosmological origin and would put constraints on the peculiar motion of the galaxy relative to the Local Group and the Virgo Supercluster" ibid.

Small "anistropies" inhomogeneities in directional measurements of temperature and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation CMB allow scientists to test cosmological and astronomical theories including cosmic inflation the geometry of the visible universe and the distribution of galaxy clusters. Wilkinson and Partridge's paper again presents the first attempt to put experimental limits on the level of anistropy.

SHACKLETON: Shackleton "concludes that glacial/interglacial variations in foraminiferal oxygen isotope records were primarily influenced by changes in the oxygen isotopic composition of seawater rather than temperature" Ravelo The Use of Oxygen and Carbon Isotopes 735. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillian & Sons. Ex-libris with very minimal interior markings and ghosting from the removal of a spine label. Complete volume bound in bright red cloth with red buckram at the spine. Tightly bound and very clean. The interior is bright and exceptionally clean throughout. Macmillan & Sons hardcover

1838266969New Orleans 1838. unbound. 3 pages front and back each measuring 10 x 8 inches New Orleans February 1 1838. Written by Calvin Keith agent for Almina Partridge mother of United States Generals Samuel Partridge and John Milton Partridge. Almina is attempting to find out what real estate holdings her late husband has in New Orleans and Smith informs her in small part: ".I found myself in a rather awkward predicament. The Judge informed me the agent he had made the appointment Mr. Parker had admitted in Court that he had been in the State Prison for passing counterfeit money and informed me he could not now be removed without showing his present incapacity to manage her property. This information could only be obtained by depositions from the place where he resides. The last agent has not obtained any of the funds & I have much confidence in believing that his bail will not permit him to remove the funds and certainly not without securing him. On the whole I consider it rather a bad business & wish myself fairly out of it." Usual folds with no weaknesses; extensive pencil underlining on the second page; small chip on the right edge of the third page with slight loss of text. Good condition.

unknown
