195760736Tulare CA 1957. 12mo. 2 volumes: 16 368 32; 16 368 32 pp. with entries on 306 pages of the 1955 diary and 260 pages of the one for 1957 a total of approximately 7500 words unused pages were generally marked "vacation" or "day off"; expenses were noted on the daily entry pages rather than in the separate "accounts" section at the rear; laid into the 1955 diary are three photographs from an arrest. Many of the daily entries are simple statements of areas patrolled but many also report hunting and fishing prospects in the area e.g. "The few anglers that were willing to work for their trout were successful in catching limits in Bear Creek upstream from the Mtn. Home Road. A few newly hatched quail were observed in Yokohl Valley near Milton Fire Station" "Checked 35-40 hunters & no deer" "200 pheasants were released on the Tipton open pheasant area after shooting hours on Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 76 46 males and 30 females of the leg bands were recovered from hunters mostly on the morning of the 22nd. There were about 200 hunters in the area" hunting violations including illegal clam digging at Pismo Beach arrests general observations on the wildlife in the area meetings with other wardens and fish and game officials training etc. An excellent representation of the daily activities of a game warden in Tulare California and its surroundings in the mid-1950s. Well used diaries but the entries quite legible. Gilt- stamped green cloth well worn spine ends frayed and joints split hinges cracked etc. #7978.

hardcover books

Very good. 11 engraved cut-out figures or objects including ferryman three couples wolf goat cabbage and boat to be slotted into boat original box with engraved pictorial label colored by hand A rare children's game possibly printed by the Parisian publisher Nepveau. Contained in the box measuring 14cm x 7cm x 1cm is a complete set of figures for the two river crossing puzzles known as the 'Jealous Husbands Problem' and 'Goat Wolf and Cabbage'. In both puzzles there are only two places in the boat. In the Jealous Husbands Problem no woman can be with another man unless also accompanied by her husband. In Goat Wolf and Cabbage the wolf will eat the goat and the goat will eat the cabbage unless they are guarded by the boatman. Originally accompanied by counters and an instruction sheet now lost. The box is lightly worn else in very good condition; the figures are in fine condition except the boat which has been repaired and the cabbage which lacks the lower part of its insertion tab and one female figure lacks a hand. 14976Inventor of the landmark computer game Pong. Type Script Signed by Higinbotham 3 page -1990 "Invention and Technology Magazine" article by Frederic D. Schwartz about Higinbotham's role in the origin of computer games.

Schwartz's article begins "Remember Pong In 1972 it became the first succesful video-arcade game.In reality though it was invented in 1958 in a laboratory in then-rural Upton New York by a man named William Higinbotham." According to this article Higinbotham was integral to the birth of successful modern video games as the article explains that "Higinbotham was in charge of instrumentation design at Brookhaven National Research Laboratory BNL a government supported nuclear-research facility. To assure people that they were in no danger and that their crops would not mutate the laboratory ran tours to show how useful important and safe its research was." Higinbotham's contribution based on his desire " to liven things up" was computer based "tennis game with the court displayed on an oscilloscope's screen. For a man who had helped develop the first radar systems and designed timing devices for the Manhattan Project's atomic bomb it was a simple matter to plan the necessary circuitry and within a couple of days the game was finished." So Pong was born. As the article explains however Higinbotham was in a difficult position regarding the game's ownership. As a government employee he could not register a patent in his own name as "Uncle Sam would have owned it."

Higinbotham who had "witnessed the first test detonation at Los Alamos" and was "determined to reduce the awesome threat that nuclear weapons posed to the world" had attempted to create a game of non-violence. He lobbies and speaks against violent games and nuclear weapons and as the article concludes "It's nice to be the patriarch of Pong. But if current trends continue and his scientific efforts end up leading to a peaceful world Willy Higinbotham will have accomplished something much greater." The typescript is signed on page 3 by Higinbotham in his hand: "Best Wishes William A. Higinbotham Feb.8 1991." An interesting association piece which reveals how work on global issues such as nuclear energy intersected with the invention of peaceful computer technologies designed for diversion and entertainment. Stapled on upper left corner. In very good condition. unknown books
