8vo. (24), 255, (1) pp. Contemporary calf with gilt spine; leading edges gilt. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of this Syriac textbook, including one of the earliest investigations of the Samararitan language and script. "It is the least developed among the Semitic languages, closest to Syriac, but coarser, even less sophisticated. The Samaritan population has greatly dwindled; their capital is Nablus in Palestine, but there are also some in Damascus, Cairo, Acre and other places. Their common language is Arabic" (cf. Vater/J.). The Utrecht philologian J. Leusden (1624-99) studied philosophy in his hometown, then focused on theology and the oriental languages. He was ordained as a preacher in 1649. He subsequently moved to Amsterdam, where he took instruction in Hebrew and Talmudic scholarship from various Jewish teachers, including one of Arabian descent, and thus acquired such learning that he succeeded to the Utrecht chair of Hebrew and Jewish Antiquities in 1651 (cf. Jöcher 2409). - Binding somewhat rubbed. Ownership "J. Venturi" (dated 1805) on title page. Vater/Jülg 323. Jöcher II, 2410. Jöcher/Adelung III, 1728, 4.

Splendidly bound dictionary of French and Italian words with their counterparts in Arabic, Turkish, and Modern Greek, all in Roman transliteration. Contains brief introductions to the grammar of the various languages. Written for the use of the French army in Northern Africa and the Levant as well as for travellers and tradesmen throughout the eastern Mediterranean. - Pencil note "Relie au Caire" to flyleaf. Some browning throughout, title page and preface as well as final leaves show more pronounced foxing. Bookplate of Gaetano Querci on pastedown; old collection stamps on half-title and title page. Not in Zaunmüller or Vater/Jülg.
Large 4to. (4), 64 pp., partly printed in red and black. Modern brown half cloth. First edition. - Rare work by the Egyptologist and linguist Carl R. Lepsius (1810-84), leader of the 1842/45 Prussian expedition to Egypt. In this treatise, he presented what must be regarded as one of the earliest attempts at a standardised phonetic alphabet for all languages - a function today fulfilled by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which is still based primarily on the Latin alphabet. Among the many alphabetical systems which Lepsius takes into account are also Egyptian hieroglyphs as well as Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, Sanscrit, Bengali, Armenian, Malay, Chinese, etc. - Somewhat browned and brownstained throughout with a noticeable waterstain. Some edge flaws. Title page shows library stamp of the Gymnasium of Venray, Netherlands. Kayser XIV, 24.

Folio (305 x 200 mm). Vol. 1 (of 2) only. (40), 495, (23) pp. Wood-engraved title border, double-page woodcut map of Africa, including Arabia, and 26 illustrations, all but one coloured by a contemporary hand. 18th c. mottled calf with giltstamped red label to fully gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. Scarce first French edition of the famous description of Islamic Africa and Arabia, with the illustrations coloured by a contemporary hand; the first collection of voyages printed in France. The book was originally written in Arabic around 1526 by the Berber Andalusi geographer and traveller al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi (ca. 1494-ca. 1554), known in the West as Johannes Leo Africanus, translated into Italian by the author and first published in Venice in 1550. The Arabian Peninsula is depicted nearly complete on the double-page woodcut map and is treated extensively in the first chapter, which contains information on its people, cities, geography, religion, customs, costumes, etc. Illustrations include Arabian camels and veiled women. - Johannes Leo took his Christian name from his sponsor Pope Leo X when he converted to Christianity after his capture in 1520. While still very young he began to travel widely in the Barbary States; in 1513 he appears to have started on his famous Sudan and Sahara journeys (1513-15). In 1516-17 he travelled to Constantinople, probably visiting Egypt on the way; it is more uncertain when he visited Arabias, Armenia and Tartary. His three Egyptian journeys, immediately after the Turkish conquest, all probably fell between 1517 and 1520; on one of these he ascended the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. - Binding somewhat rubbed; spine head and hinges professionally repaired. Repairs to lower margin of first two leaves (very slight loss of title border), some toning and soiling, water- and inkstains. Very occasional marginal tears or worming. Early marginalia and ink ownerships on title page ("Pacauld" and "Ex Bibliotheca Joh. Huyseri", i. e. Johann Huyser). No other auction record of a coloured copy in RBH or ABPC. Adams L 482. Together six letters, the first in French, the remainder in English. They include discussion of a Coptic manuscript at Haarlem; Egyptian cylinders at Leiden; Leemans’ work at the Reuvens Library and his Leiden Museum responsibilities; Lee’s own museum and observatory at Hartwell; the recommendation of a language teacher seeking work in London named Abraham Claudius Verspyck and the sending of one of Lee’s manuscripts (82) to Leiden, amongst other matters. - Final page of each letter with penned address panel, postal markings and small tears from seal opening not affecting text, some negligible dusting along old folds, each with small "B.R.A" stamp (sold by British Records Association). 8vo. 2 vols. XII, 168 pp. (4), (169)-416 pp. With 6 folding engr. maps. Contemp. marbled calf with gilt cover borders and double labels to gilt spines. Marbled endpapers. Variant issue of the first edition, probably the second issue altogether. "Le Chevalier had assisted Choiseul-Gouffier in his 'Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce', and was then sent to Jassy to observe Russian troop movements. His work is an account of a journey round the shores of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea" (Atabey). While Chatzipanagioti-S. differentiates between the first and the second edition, the present variant is not described: the verso of the half-title of vol. 1 shows only the "avis au relieur"; p. 168: "Fin du tome premier"; p. 169 (beginning of text in vol. 2) is unpaginated. Thus, this apparently constitutes the second issue of the first editon. - Lechevalier stood in the service of Choiseul-Gouffier; from 1787 onwards he accompanied Alexander Ipsilanti on a tour of the Mediterranean which lasted several months. The maps show the Sea of Marmara, the Dardanelles, the Black Sea, the Bosporus, Constantinople, and Brussa. - Both title pages have contemporary ownership stamps ("S" with princely crown); a few minor tears to maps have been professionally repaired; some staining to title page of vol. 2. A prettily bound copy, formerly in the Ottoman collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer. Blackmer 995. Weber II, 649. Atabey 697. Graesse IV, 137. Cf. Chatzipanagioti-S. 538f.

S. Thomas, G. P. Murphy, and Hadji Zuber bin Ali "on behalf of his Highness Sayid Sir Taimur bin Faisal, K.C.I.E., C.S.I., Sultan of Maskat and Oman", pp. 194-197. Numerous further relevant treaties are referenced in the copious indices included with the series. - Three sets of indices bound in separate volumes, the others bound with the treaties. Some of the original wrappers somewhat damaged when not included in the binding, but well preserved. Removed from the Champlain Library of the Université de Moncton, Canada (their shelfmarks to spines and stamps to edges); previously in the library of the University of Washington, Seattle, International Fisheries Commission (their stamps to some wrappers).
