The photographs in this album which cannot be found anywhere else offer a visual documentation of this time. He hoped the booklet would serve as a memento. Together with the album it continues to do so until this day. With the shoulder sleeve insignia of the Persian Gulf command mounted on the inside of the frfont board some of the photographs are captioned on the back. The eyelets for the string on the front board have come loose. The corners of the leaves are slightly creased. Overall in very good condition. hardcover

Very Good.

President William Joyce informs "The Tremont & Gulf Railway Company is the outgrowth of the Tremont & Gulf Railroad which in its initial stages was merely a logging road with rather poor grades and alignment." He proudly recounts the Company's development.
"The storied Tremont & Gulf Railway began life in 1902 when it laid rails from a Tremont Lumber Company railhead 9 miles from the town of Tremont to Winnfield Louisiana some 40 miles to the south. Various small expansions occurred up through 1908 when the original company the Tremont & Gulf Railroad went into foreclosure. The T&G Railway emerged as successor and promptly completed another branch of 20 miles. The shortline served a timber - rich region situated amid the mainlines of several prominent Louisiana carriers: Chicago Rock Island & Pacific; Illinois Central; Louisiana & Arkansas; Missouri Pacific. Nevertheless despite these advantages the pike lost money throughout its existence" web site of Hawkins Rails online.
The Railway's original records "which had been found to be more or less incomplete and scattered" are organized compiled and printed here.
OCLC 817757631 1- SMU as of March 2025. unknown

17893818
Appearing in the March 1789 issue of the American Museum magazine this engraving is the second American version of Franklin's famous chart of the Gulf Stream printed in America. Both American versions were preceded by English and French printings. The Chart of the Gulf Stream accompanies Franklin's "Remarks upon the navigation from Newfoundland to New York." p. 213 in the magazine. Franklin prepared the chart in 1768 while serving in London as a deputy postmaster general for mail service to and from the American colonies. It was Franklin's cousin Timothy Folger of Nantucket who provided him with a practical seafarer's knowledge of the Gulf Stream and its importance in trans-Atlantic crossings.

The previous American publication of the chart was in 1786 in The Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. This updated version provides a more accurate depiction of the North American coast. State boundary lines are partially indicated. One curious boundary delineation in the chart has a portion of the District of Maine extending over the northern boundaries of New Hampshire and part of Vermont.

References: Wheat & Brun Maps & Charts Published in America before 1800: 723.

Condition: Folded as issued with misfolding along one fold line. Light to occasionally moderate soiling. Edge roughness primarily at upper left edge.

ICN 7794.1
Mathew Carey
