8vo., with coloured frontispiece, title-vignette, 11 coloured plates, monochrome illustrations in the text and pictorial endpapers on green stock; green cloth, upper board blocked and lettered in gilt, gilt back, green top, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. High quality facsimile reissue of the original edition of 1931.
8vo., First Major Edition, with copper-engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved title-vignette, 13 fine copper-engraved plates (including 2 of music scores) and 77 woodcut illustrations and decorations in the text, some light offsetting from frontispiece to title, some very light and inoffensive spotting to some margins, neat later nineteenth century inscription on blank preliminary; most attractively bound in mid-nineteenth full speckled brown calf, boards with decorative gilt frame border, back with five raised bands tooled in gilt, second compartment with black leather label framed and lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately ruled and tooled in gilt, marbled edges, gilt doublures, marbled endpapers, joints lightly rubbed, short splits in joints at head and tail (but binding wholly sound), an attractive copy of a perennial classic in period binding. The first Major edition is based on the fifth edition of 1676, the last published during Walton's lifetime, and printed by Nicol at the Shakespeare Press. Major's typically extensive notes occupy pp.395-406. The plates are engraved by Cook and Pye from the old drawings by Wale which had been 'greatly heightened in the effect, by the pencil of Mr. Frederick Nash' (W&S). Coigny 23; Oliver 23; Slater p.28; Westwood & Satchell p.225.
2 vols. in 1., 16mo., Second Tegg Edition, with an engraved frontispiece [of 2], 2 engraved title-vignettes, and 30 woodcut illustrations (the majority of fish) in the text, endpapers lightly age-stained; strongly bound in nineteenth-century full speckled calf, sides with gilt frame border, very neatly rebacked in calf to style, back with four raised bands, second compartment with red leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments ruled in gilt, a very good, bright, crisp copy. WITH THE EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY ENGRAVED ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE OF RICHARD BRINSLEY SHERIDAN [NOT THE PLAYWRIGHT] ON FRONT PASTE-DOWN. Includes the lives of the authors. A reprint of the 1797 Hawkins edition with neat woodcuts designed by W. Harvey and engraved by Williams and Thompson. Tragically, this copy wants the engraved frontispiece to Part I. Coigney 22; Horne 33, Westwood & Satchell p.226.
8vo., Third Edition thus, with frontispiece, title-vignette, 3 plates and illustrations in the text; pale green cloth, boards and backstrip elaborately blocked in blind, backstrip lettered in gilt, primrose endpapers, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a bright, clean, crisp copy. Includes Fitzgibbon's 'Advertisment' and the sketch of Walton's life. Coigney 75; Oliver 72; Westwood & Satchell p.233.
8vo., Second Edition thus, with a portrait frontispiece, decorative and printed titles, printed title-vignette, facsimile of title of first edition, 3 engraved plates of flies, and 39 woodcut illustrations (including 19 of fish and 3 of tackle and 3 of flies) in the text; strongly bound in contemporary full calf, sides with double frame border in blind, neatly rebacked in calf to style, back with brown leather label lettered in gilt, marbled edges, doublures tooled in blind, marbled endpapers, corners mildly rubbed, a very good, clean copy. Fitzgibbon's charming edition was first published in the previous year in Ingram's 'Illustrated Library'. It includes a biographical sketch of Walton condensed from Hawkins' edition of 1797. Westwood & Satchell term this 'a pretty and useful edition'. Westwood & Satchell, p. 232.
