1760wal760aLondon: Thomas Hope. G: in Good condition. Rebacked using original leather. Cover rubbed and marked. Some foxing. Slight corner damage to final four leaves. 1760. First Hawkins Edition. Brown hardback leather cover. 190mm x 120mm 7" x 5". lvi xxii 303pp; xlviii iv ii iv 128pp; index. 15 b/w plates & numerous b/w vignettes. This edition came into competition with that issued by Browne in the previous year and gave rise to 'sundry skirmishes and passages of arms between the two editors.' Browne's charges of plagiarism appear unfounded. Hawkins reproduced the two parts of the 1676 edition ignoring most of Moses Browne's changes he disagreed with Brownes editing. . A sort of wandering genetic remnant of several aristocratic British bloodlines but frequently financially wobbly and unable to get a steady footing Herbert seems to have alienated most people in his circle at one time or another and eventually shot himself in a full length mirror after having thrown a party to which many were invited but none attended. <br /> Although his output included a slew of adventure novels and various other literary exploits he is chiefly remembered for his wistful keenly observed and evocative accounts of woodland sporting activities. Scarce and collectable. Stringer & Townsend unknown

171521179London 1715. Broadsheet. 1p. plus printed docket title on verso. Disbound. Small folio. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. A rare British leaflet from the Fishmonger-Smackman Controversy of 1715. That year a bill was in motion before Parliament that would regulate various aspects of the fishing industry including fish size net use and mesh size and the importation of lobster. The latter issue ignited a significant controversy between and among British fish merchants and lobstermen with the most vocal merchants supporting a clause that would remove a ban on the sale of lobster caught by foreigners. In the present document the pro-free-trade-lobster fishmonger lobby responds to a recent leaflet by fellow fish merchants allied with the smackmen. An early example of commercial lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715.
