Roy. 8vo., Second Edition, with tinted engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, 23 fine tinted engraved plates of views, numerous fine engraved illustrations of species in the text, and floral patterned endpapers, small neat signature on front free endpaper verso; original green cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in gilt, hinges tender (but binding wholly sound), a very good, bright, clean copy. Originally published as two volumes folio in 1879, Houghton's 'Fishes' is one of the finest illustrated natural history works of the nineteenth century, with fine coloured plates by Lydon and woodblock prints by Fawcett. The daunting cost of the original publication led to the present (second) edition (published by Fawcett and aimed at the angler rather than the collector) which replaces the coloured plates with tinted views but retains the fine engraved illustrations of species in the text. Freeman 1782; Nissen ZB12009 (recording the first edition). INEXPLICABLY, THIS IMPORTANT ISSUE IS NOT RECORDED BY HAMPTON.
