16774Photo Album Basketball Photo album of teenagers around 1917-1918 playing basketball at the beach and sledding. Also photos of uniformed WWI military on leave. 48 silver gelatin photos. 7 1/4 x 11 1/4 in. Original black cloth boards. 100 pg. First 15 pages used. Gilt title "Photographs" on front cover. 3 photos of the 1918 girls' basketball team with "WHS 1918" written on the ball. The girls' uniforms are an interesting balance between an athletic necessity for free movement without causing a controversy over non-feminine clothing for the young ladies; they wear elbow-length shirts with a neckerchief and long billowy culottes that would allow them to run and jump on the court while maintaining their modesty. 4 men dressed in WWI-era military coats and hats stand on a street corner. 1 photos of a uniformed sailor posing with a female friend. Group of 15 girls pose on veranda outside a large building perhaps as a class portrait; two other photos show the group sitting on the lawn in front of the same building. 12 photos at the beach show a group of boys and girls in their swimming outfits: swim caps and short above the knee dresses for girls and shorts and tank tops for the boys. They pose on the sandy beach standing in the surf and onboard a small boat. 1 photo of the boys' 1917 basketball team with 1 figure cut out. 2 photos of girls sledding in a wintery scene. Photo of a crowd lined up to watch a parade and 2 photos of women wearing costumes of dresses from the late 1800s. 2 photos have one figure cut out. Tear in Page 9. Four photos loose. 1917168341917. Unidentified compiler. Photograph album 1917-1920 documents high school life and World War I-era military activity in the United States capturing both educational environments and wartime training as experienced within local communities. The album provides primary visual evidence of student athletics teacher involvement and organized military exercises during the First World War supporting research into youth culture physical education and civilian engagement with wartime preparedness. The inclusion of both school-based and military imagery situates the material within the broader mobilization of American society during the war years.
Unidentified compiler. Photograph album. 1917-1920. Album containing 112 silver gelatin photographs with an additional 50 loose images taken in locations including San Jacinto California and Charleston South Carolina. The photographs depict a range of subjects including high school environments where groups of students stand assembled outside a brick school building labeled "High School" and organized athletic teams including a basketball team posed with a "DHS" banner and a player holding a ball marked "DHS." Individual athletic activity is represented through images such as a hurdler mid-jump. Military content includes labeled scenes from 1917 showing "Battery A some Marines and Infantry" as well as an image of a blimp or Zeppelin in flight indicating contemporary military technology. A portrait of a young man in uniform posed with older adults in front of a fence suggests familial connections to military service. Additional photographs document everyday life and leisure including fishing scenes early automobiles such as Model T vehicles a woman cycling a child playing violin and a woman in a canoe. Informal captions provide commentary ranging from observational "Jumping for what the robins left" to humorous "Who are you smiling at" reflecting the compiler's personal engagement with the images.
The album emerges from the period of American participation in World War I when military training and patriotic activity intersected with civilian institutions such as schools. Physical education and organized athletics were increasingly emphasized within secondary education often linked to ideals of discipline and preparedness. The geographic spread between California and South Carolina suggests mobility or travel possibly connected to professional or military contexts. 194119551AB1941. University City 1941. 29 : 195 cm. 1 leaf text 1 leaf illustrations. Alvie E. Sanberg of University City Missouri invented a number of different goal improvements. On February 24 1936 he filed both a design patent application and a utility patent application for his new "Baketball Goal"; the two patents were issued a week apart in September of that same year. Prior to his invention nets had to be tied or lanced on to the hoop. But thanks to Sandberg all one neeeds to do is take loops from the net and hook them over the connectors circling the ring. This method is so effective that we could not think today of attaching the net any other mode. - See "Smithonian - The patent behind Basketball". unknown
