Tarkanian became famous for his colorful behavior such as habitually chewing on a towel during games and for his public criticisms and legendary clashes with the NCAA. Wade played for the Lady Statesmen from 1930-32 and then won three straight national championships from 1975-77 as a coach at the school. During that span the team had an improbable 51 game winning streak. Wade was inducted into the Naismith hall of Fame in 1985.<br /> <br /> This copy signed to the important University of Tennessee men's basketball coach 1962-77 Ray Mears. Mears ranks in the top 15 all-time in terms of winning percentage with a .747 mark in the NCAA. <br /> <br /> <br /> A fantastic grouping from the historic program at Delta State. . From the Dust Jacket: "The arrival of 'Wilt the Stilt' Chamberlain in Los Angeles created one large 7 foot headache for Coach Butch van Breda Kolff. Whereas Elgin Baylor and Jerry West both legendary superstars responded positively to Butch's 'hands on' coaching policies Wilt resisted the advice and instructions of his new coach. Although the Lakers advanced to the finals of the NBA for the 1968-1969 season Butch recognized the conflict with Wilt and dealt with it as best he could. But in the NBA play-off game with the series tied at 3-3 and the Lakers playing poorly Wilt took himself from the game claiming an injured leg. Butch replaced Stilt with Mel Counts and the Lakers closed the deficit to one point. When Wilt wanted to reenter the game VBK denied him entry and told him to 'sit down.' The Lakers subsequently lost 108-106 Butch was the scapegoat and his career as Coach of the Lakers was over. Subsequently he took on the Detroit Pistons and the New Orleans Jazz as potential turn-around situations. He instantly improved the records of both franchises but confrontations with club-owners who seemed forever critical of his life-style eventually led him away from the NBA. He returned briefly to coached at the College level where he led the University of New Orleans to a Sun Belt conference title. Then he coached the New Orleans Pride a woman's professional team.". Illustrated with 24 pages of photos. When Alice Coachman won the high jump in the 1948 Games she became the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Many experts think she would earned several additional Olympic medals if the 1940 and 1944 Games had not been cancelled due to WWII. While in high school she won the AAU nationals in the high jump and 50-meter dash. In college she dominated track and field collecting a host of national titles -- championships in the 50-meter dash the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter relay. Her ten consecutive AAU titles in the high jump 1938 - 1948 are still a record. Coachman also won three championships as a star player for the Tuskegee women's basketball team. She was named to five All-American teams. At the 1996 Atlanta Games she was honored as one of the 100 greatest athletes in Olympic history. Appendices list her many championships the nine Sports Halls of Fame to which she belongs since increased to 10 and many other honors and tributes. Bibliographical references. Carmelo Anthony is an American professional basketball player for the New York Knicks. Anthony attended Towson Catholic High School and Oak Hill Academy before playing college basketball at Syracuse. In Anthony's freshman season he led the Orangemen to their first and only National Championship and was named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Anthony then entered the 2003 NBA draft where he was selected with the third overall pick by the Denver Nuggets. Since entering the NBA Anthony has been named an All-Star nine times and an All-NBA Team member six times. While playing for Denver he led the Nuggets to the playoffs every year from 2004 to 2010 winning two division titles in that span. In 2009 Anthony led the Nuggets to their first Conference Finals appearance since 1985. In 2011 he was traded from Denver to the New York Knicks just days prior to the NBA trade deadline. A portrait of the Waseda University basketball team from 1927; according to its manuscript caption the photo was taken following their defeat by the University of California team at the Oakland Auditorium on a tour of the Pacific coast. Carlson was an amazing individual who practiced medicine while coaching the Pitt Panthers basketball team for thirty years while essentially winning the national college championship in at least two seasons. This book came out the same year the Panthers were undefeated. Carlson innovated the Figure 8 offense and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame and the Helms Foundation Basketball Hall of Fame. On February 24 1936 he filed both a design patent application and a utility patent application for his new "Baketball Goal"; the two patents were issued a week apart in September of that same year. Prior to his invention nets had to be tied or lanced on to the hoop. But thanks to Sandberg all one neeeds to do is take loops from the net and hook them over the connectors circling the ring.
