George Godfrey 1852-1901 born on Prince Edward Island began boxing professionally in 1879 beating Charles Hadley via sixth-round knockout on 23 February 1883 to become World Colored Heavyweight Champion. Mild rubbing and toning to edges; Very Good and sound. <br /> <br /> John Morrissey 1831-1878 known as Old Smoke was an Irish-American politician bare-knuckle boxing champion and criminal. While this fight at Tierra del Fuego is not historically verified clearly Morrissey was the model for the hero. Born in County Tipperary Ireland his family emigrated to the U.S. when Morrissey was still a child. Among the exploits that would make him a folk hero in Ireland were his winning of the heavyweight boxing championship fighting and possibly murdering Bill the Butcher and testifying against Boss Tweed and winning a State Senate seat on an anti-Tammany platform. A version of this ballad is included in Sandburg's The American Songbag. <br /> <br /> Brereton printed a number of these Irish Street Ballads which were cheaply and carelessly printed as they are riddled with errors. "A closer investigation reveals the blemishes of composition—inverted letters multiple type-faces broken sorts uneven leading etc. Clearly neither the printer nor reader cared much for these minor details. The broadsheets were printed quickly and inexpensively" Kuhn. A large and important depiction of an exhibition sparring match held in Fives Court in London's Little St. Martin's Street a tennis and fives court hired for such events the participants unlike a regular bare-knuckle bout being fitted with gloves "mittens" or "mufflers". The contestants shown were Ned Turner "The Out-and-Outer" who had killed a man in the ring serving time for manslaughter and Jack Randall "The Prime Irish Lad" unbeaten throughout 12 years of ring activity. The two had fought an epic fight in 1818 which Randall won to become the Lightweight champion. A large number of famous pugilists are pictured in the audience not always accurately Jem Belcher the famed champion and the first real sporting celebrity in the modern sense is shown although he was dead and it is a fair portrait of "The Fancy" as the mix of often raffish sporting professionals and upscale spectators including nobility came to be known. 1855102006Large folded newspaper 21" x 28" pages illustrated 4 pp. Paper is a bit fragile but better quality newsprint helps offset a little edges with tears chips folds and creases but generally not affecting text or illustrations some splits at middle fold 1 1/2" tear in the middle of the paper that goes through the four pages with some loss some soiling and staining especially on bottom of last page. Overall about fair. WILL BE FOLDED WHEN SHIPPED.The highlight of the paper is the coverage of the Tom Hyer and Yankee Sullivan fight which occurred a few years earlier. A large wood engraved illustration shows the two fighters squaring off in the ring. While Sullivan a former political enforcer and convicted felon and a somewhat boastful individual ended up getting knocked out in less than 18 minutes. The fight was fought in Maryland and under the bare-knuckle rules. The paper also contains pictures of other famous fighters of the era including Tom Molineaux Tom Cribb Jem Belcher Johnny Walker and Jack Langan. Molineaux would fight in a losing effort against Tom Cribb for the title of Champion of England which at that time pretty much meant the heavyweight champion of the world. Molineaux was a former slave and would fight for a title almost 100 years before Jack Johnson won the heavyweight title from Tommy Burns. The Pictorial Clipper appears to be a supplement of the New York Clipper which was in business between 1853 and 1924 and had an entertainment focus. books

Octavo 20th-century three-quarter red morocco gilt raised bands marbled endpapers all edges gilt. $3000.Early edition of this boxing classic with 50 engraved plates including an engraved vignette title page in Volume I 45 portraits and four folding plates of boxing matches handsomely bound by Bayntun.Egan was probably one of boxing's most enthusiastic and ardent disciples. Egan devotes a major part of Boxiana to a history of the boxing careers of about over a hundred boxers often including a round to round account of the famous fights of a particular boxer such as Jim Belcher Tom Cribb Dan Mendoza Tom Molyneaux 'Gentleman' John Jackson and many others. First published in 1812 Boxiana proved so popular that Egan expanded the work to an eventual four volumes; the fourth volume was written by another author after Egan briefly lost the rights to the series but after securing the rights to the title he published a further two volumes as part of a New Series. With Volume II only of the New Series. Without the portrait of Alexander Reed in the last volume but with an additional plate depicting ""A Sparring Match at the Fives Court"" in Volume III. Owner signature.Plates occasionally trimmed a bit close a few leaves with marginal paper repairs in the last volume. Very handsomely bound. hardcover
