Pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. In December of 1971 the 37th Annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Award was presented to Auburn University's Pat Sullivan "The Touchdown Machine." Sullivan was chosen as the outstanding college football player in the United States for 1971. This January 1972 issue features an article about that presentation and 24 photos from the ceremony. Among the photos are several of Pat Sullivan a number of actor John Wayne "The Duke" and previous Heisman winners including Elroy 'Crazy Legs' Hirsch Jim Plunkett Dick Kazmaier Pete Dawkins and Larry Kelley. Bound in the original pictorial pale blue wraps. This copy is from the collection of Ronald Cobleigh past President of the Downtown Athletic Club - sponsor of the Heisman Memorial Trophy. Dick Herbert was a sports writer and editor who chronicled the rise of the Atlantic Coast Conference. He was the sports editor of The News & Observer of Raleigh for 29 years until 1971. Herbert was known for his attention to detail and an irascible style. While a journalist Herbert witnessed the breakup of the Southern Conference formation of the ACC the Dixie Basketball Classic scandals and the desegregation of southern college sports. He previously served as secretary of both the American Football Coaches Association and the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers Association before being inducted into the Duke University and North Carolina Halls of Fame. Herbert was also a past president of the U.S. Football Writers Association. The American Football Coaches Association AFCA is an association of over 11000 American football coaches and staff on all levels. According to its constitution some of the main goals of the American Football Coaches Association are to "maintain the highest possible standards in football and the profession of coaching football" and to "provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football and coaching." The AFCA along with USA Today is responsible for the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Coaches Poll. The AFCA is also responsible for the Top 25 poll for Division II and Division III football. The AFCA was founded in a meeting for 43 coaches at the Hotel Astor in New York City on Dec. 27 1921. It is headquartered in Waco Texas the headquarters building is located across from Baylor University formerly coached by AFCA executive director Grant Teaff. The association has over 10000 members and represents coaches at all levels including the National Collegiate Athletic Association the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics the National Junior College Athletic Association the National Federation of State High School Associations the National Football League the Canadian Football League USA Football the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame and Pop Warner Football. The AFCA is considered the primary professional association for football coaches at all levels of competition. Another primary goal of the American Football Coaches Association is the promotion of safety. The association has established a code of ethics and has made many safety recommendations. An annual injury survey begun by the AFCA in the 1930s has provided valuable data and has led to a remarkable reduction of injuries in the sport down through the years. Craig Morton born February 5 1943 was quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys New York Giants and Denver Broncos. He was selected fifth overall by the Cowboys in the 1965 NFL Draft. In 1969 he became the starter at quarterback over Roger Staubach. He led the Cowboys to Super Bowl V where the team lost 16-13 to the Baltimore Colts. After 3 lackluster seasons with the Giants Morton was traded to the Denver Broncos in 1977. At age 34 Morton revived his career with the Broncos finishing the season as the second rated passer in the AFC. Morton was the first NFL quarterback to start the Super Bowl for two different teams Dallas in V and Denver in XII - data from Wikipedia. Fine condition. NOT a library discard. Sharp corners.
