RARE FIRST EDITION OF PIETRO BINI'S ANTHOLOGY ON FLORENTINE FOOTBALL a forerunner to the modern games of soccer rugby and American football. THIS IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST TREATISES ON THAT PREDECESSOR TO OUR MODERN GAMES.
In the game of calcio two teams each consisting usually of 27 men are engaged on an enclosed ground of 172 x 82 braccie fiorentine just little smaller than a modern football field. The action consists of carrying and kicking a pumped ball of medium size with fists and feet hence the name calcio in order to make it pass beyond the terminal barriers of the adversaries' half. One such successful action is called caccia. The team making the most caccie is the winner. Games typically last one hour and are played 'for honour's sake'.
The wonderfully detailed description of the game is largely by Giovanni de' Bardi and though it was first published anonymously nearly a century earlier the text included here is greatly expanded and illustrated. It fully explains the rules and manners of the game and describes a number of games that had recently been played in and near Florence. The double-page plate depicts a match in the Piazza Santa Croce is very impressive and provides us with a lasting 17th century "instant replay" of the event. 189376702New York: Charles H. Nicoll 1893. First Edition. This early football program is notable for featuring William H. Lewis 1868-1949 the first African American to earn First Team All-America honors who is seen here at the center of the Harvard team portrait. After graduating from Amherst and enrolling at Harvard Law School he played two seasons for the Crimson helping the team compile a 22-2 record. In November 1893 Harvard team captain Bertram G. Waters was unable to play in the last game of the season due to an injury. The game was Lewis' last college football game and the team voted him as the acting captain for the game making him Harvard's first African American team captain.

Following law school Lewis was hired as a football coach at Harvard where he served from 1895 to 1906. It was during this time he proposed the "neutral zone" rule that is still used today to lessen the brutality of the game at the line of scrimmage before the snap. He also wrote one of the first books on the game A Primer of College Football 1896 before entering into politics. Elected to the Massachusetts legislature in 1901 he was named assistant U.S. attorney general for Boston in 1903. In October 1910 William Howard Taft appointed Lewis as a U.S. Assistant Attorney General sparking a national debate of the President's so-called "Black Cabinet". Later he led a successful private practice in Boston and emerged as a leading civil rights leader and speaker. Lewis was posthumously honored with induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.

One of the only two losses in Lewis' Harvard career was the November 25 1893 game against Yale at Hampden Park in Springfield Massachusetts. For the first time Harvard wore leather uniforms rather than the expected canvas vest and canvas or moleskin pants. The Eli learned of the change about an hour before kickoff and countered by covering their uniforms with rosin which proved successful as Yale triumphed 6-0 on the strength of a Frank Butterworth touchdown in this era touchdowns were worth four points successful kicks after goal were worth two.

A striking production die cut in the shape of a football. Oblong oval octavo 7 1/4" x 10 3/4": 76 pp. with photographic illustrations and numerous advertisements. The original cloth-covered boards feature decorative blind stamping and a stitched leather binding emulating the construction of a football. Period pencil signature to the title page with a few neat pencil notations to the blue Yale Score Card leaf. Some mild wear along the extremities with a bit of light discoloration to the rear panel; otherwise very good. Charles H. Nicoll unknown

63150School notebook front cover lacking 8vo. utilizing 22pp. of the lined paper to record through newspaper stories and candid and school photos the winning season for the Subiaco Academy football team. Laid down in the notebook are numerous news articles as well as 14 photos of the team most 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. or 3 1/2 x 5 1/4 in. and most with caption titles in casual dress and uniform or at practice plus a couple of slightly larger posed photos of the team and coaches. Johnson also played on the basketball and baseball teams for the school and a photo of each team is present in the notebook. There are 9 additional photos unmounted 4 small ones 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. showing football practice the other five showing groups of students posing as members of the football team with musical instruments as members of the band and as members of the student body with the faculty in front of one of the school buildings. Two of these photos are stamped on the back by the Abbey Photo Shop in Subiaco. Accompanied by two letters of polite rejection for football scholarships one from Tulane in February and one from Loyola of the South in April 1938. The Tulane letter notes his size and says most of their quarterbacks are much larger than he is. Also present is a letter in pencil undated to "Dear Mother" and signed "Son" presumably written by Johnson to his mother the summer after he graduated from the academy. He was working in nearby Hazen first in a drug store then in the hay fields earning $1.50 a day.
Sonny Johnson a young man from Little Rock attended Subiaco Academy a private Catholic high school and played on the football team alternating between full and half back positions as well as occasionally quarterbacking. As a member of Coach Reynold Maus' team he earned a letter in the 1936-37 season. The news articles are full of his daring feats on the field: "Maus' most reliable back is "Sonny" Johnson a Little Rock boy who plays fullback. Johnson is a triple-threat man and as signal-caller has guided the Trojans to six victories against one defeat. Although he weighs only 139 Johnson has played every quarter but one this fall." Sonny Johnson born in Cotton Plant Arkansas in 1920 was the son of Parham and Evelyn Johnson. His parents divorced when he was young. Sonny attended Little Rock High School Columbia Military Academy and Subiaco Academy graduating in May 1938. Unsuccessful at his attempts for college scholarships he followed his father into the military and enlisted in the Navy in April 1939. He trained as an Aviation Radio Operator and was assigned to the USS Enterprise and escort duty on the USS Hornet. On May 13 1942 his bomber crew took off on a mission from which it did not return. He was reported missing presumed dead at the age of 22.
There are two ink notes written later at the bottom of the college rejection letters. Both lament his lost opportunities for higher education: "It kept him from entering the U.S. Service as an Ensign. Wish I had really known how very much he wanted to go to college."

unknown books
19363362Mexico City 1936. Very good. 83pp. Illustrated. Original printed wrappers stapled. Some tanning to covers and text minor edge wear minor marginal chipping to top of first text leaf. Presentation copy of a rare work printing the rules and regulations of American football compiled by the founder of La Federacion de Futbol Americano Dr. Francisco Contreras. The author includes a full-page inscription on the inside of the front wrapper signed "Coach Dr. Panche" dated September 22 1935. The illustrations interspersed throughout the work include a plan of a football field various gameplay techniques such as hiking the ball blocking and tackling both legal and illegal ways as well as a handful of common referee's signals. An interesting work indicating the initial popularity of American football in the first half of the 20th century which waxes and wanes with the generations in other countries around the world. OCLC lists only one copy of the present work at the Biblioteca Nacional though somewhat oddly the date of publication is given likely erroneously as 1939 though the front wrapper title has in it the 1936 date. unknown
