Non ci sono atleti straordinari, forse nessuno giocherà nei pro, ma intorno alle inebrianti vittorie e alle inopinate sconfitte dei Panthers si è cementato negli anni l'orgoglio di un'intera comunità. Nel 1988 H.G. Bissinger decise di trascorrere un anno proprio lì, a Odessa, «la città peggiore sulla faccia della Terra», quella con il più alto tasso di omicidi della nazione, tra file di motel semivuoti e impianti di estrazione in disuso, dove gli abitanti pensavano che «l'unico governo buono fosse l'assenza di governo».
