Radulphe Pierre<br>January 1834 | 32 x 50 cm | one leaf<br>A very nice illustrated certificate in coated watercolors, gum and manuscript, of a master fencer, signed by all the masters of the garrison at Ancona (66th Infantry Regiment) on the occasion of Jean François Victor Léger (a student of Pierre Radulphe) receiving the rank of Master of «Counterpoint» (sabre). «We, the masters of counterpoint in the garrison of Ancona, having examined the abilities of sieur Léger Jean François Victor hereby record our having received him as Master, as a token of which we have issued him with the present Bre vet for his benefit and to witness what is true and therefore invite our brothers in arms to lend him aid and assistance wherever he shall have earned their esteem and friendship.» A nice fencing scene in the foreground of the document. Marginal spotting as well as a few repairs using paper strips to verso. The town of Ancona, where this certificate was issued, was occupied by French troops from 1832 to 1838, which is to say during the Italian crisis pitting France against Austria in a battle for influence in the peninsula. Fencing was widespread during in Empire period when each regiment had its Master of Arms. Optional in the army from 1815 on, it was made obligatory once more in 1824 before becoming optional again in 1834, the year this document was produced. A highly regulated discipline, fencing inspired a number of writers (including Stendhal, Dumas, and others) before becoming an Olympic sport in 1896. [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Très beau brevet illustré, aquarellé, gommé et manuscrit, de maître d'escrime, signé par l'ensemble des maîtres de la garnison d'Ancône (66è régiment d'infanterie), à l'occasion de la réception au rang de maître de « contre-pointe » (sabre) de Jean François Victor Léger, élève de Pierre Radulphe : « Nous maîtres de contre-pointe de la garnison d'Ancône après avoir examiné les capacités du sieur Léger Jean François Victor reconnaissons l'avoir reçu en qualité de maître en foi de quoi nous lui avons délivré le présent BREVET pour lui servir et valoir ce que de raison et invitons nos frères d'armes à lui porter aide et assistance partout où il aura mérité leur estime et leur amitié. » Belle scène de combat d'escrime au premier plan du document. Rousseurs marginales ainsi que quelques restaurations à l'aide de bandes de papier au verso. La ville d'Ancône, lieu de réception de ce brevet, fut occupée par les garnisons françaises de 1832 à 1838. C'est-à-dire à l'époque de la crise d'Italie opposant la France à l'Autriche pour la maîtrise de l'influence sur la péninsule. La pratique de l'escrime était largement répandue sous le premier Empire où chaque régiment avait son maître d'arme. Facultative dans l'armée à partir de1815, elle redevint obligatoire en 1824 avant d'être optionnelle en 1834, année de rédaction de notre document. Discipline extrêmement codifiée, l'escrime inspira de nombreux écrivains (Stendhal, Dumas...) avant de devenir un sport olympique en 1896.
