Original purple finely-textured cloth front board lettered in gilt. Some spotting. Boards somewhat marked a little bumped to edges cloth lightly rippled in places. An attractively-illustrated account of the Earl of Eglinton’s famous folly a tournament banquet and ball in best medieval style. It attracted a hundred thousand spectators and cost him tens of thousands of pounds partly due to inclement Scottish weather. ‘Although the tournament was ridiculed by some critics its enactment of chivalric metaphor is now seen to have inspired Victorian imagination in art and literature as well as public and private standards of behaviour’ ODNB. First edition of this lavishly illustrated souvenir program for the 1919 Tournament of Roses parade events celebrating the end of World War I. Sadly this was probably the precipitating events which triggered the massive outbreaks of the 1918-1919 flu pandemic through Los Angeles Pasadena and surrounding cities resulting in forcing school closures bans on public gatherings and 1000’s of cases and deaths. In addition there is also featured a land promotion section for the latter half of the brochure touting the notable citizens businesses hotels and stylish homes & gardens in Pasadena and Southern California. Royal octavo 9 3/4" x 8 1/4" single sheet. Signed by Anatoly Karpov Boris Spassky German grandmaster Artur Yusupov Russian-French grandmaster Andrei Sokolow Dutch grandmaster Timman English grandmaster Tony Miles 1955 - 2001 and the Yugoslav-Serbian grandmaster Ljubomir Ljubojevic. <br /><br />The strongest tournament held between 1986 and 1987 was Bugojno 1986. This was a Class 12 tournament including six of the top ten players in the world from the May 1986 rating list. The next-strongest tournaments were Tilburg 1986 Class 11 and Vienna Open 1986 Class 9. The 5th International Bugojno Chess Tournament held in Yugoslavia in 1986 was the first category XVI event ever held. Eight top grandmasters were invited to participate in the double round robin. They were in order of ELO: Anatoli Karpov 2700 Jan Timman 2645 Artur Yusupov 2645 Anthony Miles 2610 Lajos Portisch 2610 Boris Spassky 2610 Ljubomir Ljubojevic 2605 and Andrei Sokolov 2595. Karpov won once again but Andrei Sokolov also made a terrific showing going undefeated and dealing Karpov his only loss in the tournament. <br /><br /><b>Condition:</b> The sheet is slightly discolored and shows signs of wear else very good. The event which attracted numerous highly distinguished visitors and participants from both Britain and Europe and drew 100000 spectators was marred by heavy rain on the day.
