This small booklet is a compact atlas for the State of California. It has an initial tables of distances for 1600 places from four cities; San Francisco Sacramento Fresno and Los AngelesThere is an indexed set of twenty-five maps covering the entire state. Additionally there is California Trunk Highways covering twenty-seven maps. They were; Redwood Highway Pacific Highway Coast Highway Valley Highway Los Angeles to San Diego- via coast route and Los Angeles to San Diego-via inland route. In the back are fold out maps for traveling specific routes like "route to Lake Tahoe. Overall this is an exceptional compact production for pre-federal highway numbers. 193153870N. P.: Privately printed 1931 1931. Fourth edition. 8vo. 8 3/4" x 4 3/8" printed wrappers printed in blue on green paper stock and with a cloth spine 239 pp. maps mileage tables. Provides automobile service in California but the service is modified for drivers in Arizona Idaho Nevada Oregon Utah and Washington. The National Automobile Club started delivering peace of mind to motorists on February 28 1924. The first headquarters were established at 362 Pine Street San Francisco California. It was founded to provide assistance to motorists when that unexpected roadside emergency arose. Back then hard-surfaced roads were a novelty vehicle disablements prevalent flat tires were commonplace and gas was purchased at the general store. Engineers and cartographers in the Club's Engineering Department were engaged to log the roads of the state and to draft maps for the information and guidance of the members. NAC's maps remained in demand by the California Highway Patrol and the United States Bureau of Roads for decades. With a portrait frontispiece of Voiture. A very scarce work last seen at auction in 1970. Vincent Voiture was a French poet and writer of prose. During his lifetime he did not publish any works in book form. After his death that his verses and prose letters were the delight of courtiers and were copied and admired. Irregular pagination as called for. First 192 pages are paginated as normal where the pagination then goes to 189-236pp. On page 236 Letter CXVII the pagination ends and the catch word does not match the letter on the following page Letter CXVIII. This appears to be the norm as the copy on EEBO also has this. This was the first and only edition of this work translated from the original French into English by J D John Davies. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller Humphrey Moseley and began his unfortunately unfinished PhD dissertation on him. In a marbled calf binding with gilt stamping to board edges. Has been rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally smart with patches of slight rubbing to boards. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown Christopher Rowe. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age toned with heavy patches of spotting throughout not affecting readability of text.
