1979230931979. Cold War Nuclear History Activism "No Nukes" rally photograph archive May 6 1979 documents the largest anti-nuclear demonstration in United States history organized in direct response to the March 28 1979 partial core meltdown at Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Pennsylvania. Held on the National Mall in Washington DC forty days after the accident the demonstration drew tens of thousands of participants and marked the rapid consolidation of a national anti-nuclear movement linking environmental activism Cold War energy policy and public distrust of federal regulatory authority. The photographs document speakers addressing the assembled crowd massed protesters carrying anti-nuclear signage including a banner reading "Nu/oclear Answer" and the presence of the Public Interest Video Network establishing a visual record of a protest movement at the moment of national expansion.

Archive of 10 large-format silver gelatin photographs Washington DC May 6 1979 each measuring approximately 14" x 10". Photographs capture multiple vantage points including podium-level speaking events crowd formations across the Mall street-level marching and on-site broadcast operations. Several images document the Public Interest Video Network with visible signage camera equipment and production staff indicating organized independent media coverage of the demonstration. Additional frames include close portraits of participants and organizers small-group discussions and a broadcast interview setup before a large audience. One photograph shows two speakers at a microphone addressing the crowd; another shows marchers carrying the "Nu/oclear Answer" banner; others document camera crews and production coordination situating the event within the emerging use of portable video technology in activist documentation.

The demonstration occurred within weeks of the Three Mile Island accident and preceded the September 1979 No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden and the subsequent Battery Park rally placing this archive at the early stage of a national protest movement that reshaped public debate over nuclear power in the United States. The presence of independent media infrastructure within the photographs underscores the role of activist-controlled documentation in circulating protest imagery outside traditional press channels. Minor handling wear and edge silvering are present consistent with storage of large-format prints. Overall very good condition. A large-format photographic record of the moment anti-nuclear protest scaled from localized reaction to coordinated national movement in the immediate aftermath of Three Mile Island. unknown

33046801Peking 18 August 1966. Large single sheet broad side b.w. photo size 45 x 27 cm. sheet size: 48.4 x 32 cm. rubs closed tears verso mended/restored/patched minor loss folds caption in Chines likely a newspaper extract. RARE ! . . . ARRIVAL OF HONG WEI BING RED GUARDS AT TIANANMEN SQUARE . . . MASS RALLY AUGUST 18 1966 . .THE BEGINNING OF THE WEN HUA DA GEMING CULTURE REVOLUTION . . This is a most historic and impressive photograph. The date is not stated but it is a true-graphic record of the first mass rally of the "Hong Wei Bing" "Red Guards" and "Cultural Revolutionaries" in Beijing's Tiananmen Square August 18 1966. Marking the historic beginning of a reign of terror in China never seen before. "Historic" is an understatement ! . QUOTE FROM WIKIPEDIA: . "He Chairman Mao gave the movement a more public boost at a massive rally on 18 August at Tiananmen Square. Mao appeared atop Tiananmen wearing an olive green military uniform the type favored by Red Guards but which he had not worn in many years. He personally greeted 1500 Red Guards and waved to 800000 other Red Guards and onlookers below. . The rally was led by Chen Boda and Lin Biao gave a keynote speech. Red Guard leaders led by Nie Yuanzi also gave speeches. A high school Red Guard put a red arm band inscribed with the characters for "Red Guard" "Hong Wei Bing" on the Chairman who stood for six hours. The '8-18' rally as it was known was the first of eight receptions the Chairman gave to Red Guards in Tiananmen through the fall of 1966. . It was this rally that signified the beginning of the 'Red Guards' involvement in implementing the aims of the 'Cultural Revolution.' The second rally held on 31 August was led by Kang Sheng and Lin Biao also donned a red arm band. The last rally was held on 26 November 1966. In all the Chairman greeted eleven to twelve million 'Red Guards' most of whom traveled from afar to attend the rallies." . WHAT THE PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS: This stunning and historic photo shows unending lines of P.L.A. trucks loaded with the youthful "Red Guards" & "Cultural Revolutionaries." The platform of Government officials to the right in Tiananmen Square. Some 800000 youthful "Red Guards" & "Cultural Revolutionaries" are in attendance at this the first of the mass rallies held on the official beginning day of the "Cultural Revolution" and the establishment of the notorious "Red Guards." . DATE: This is an undated photograph but clearly from the subject matter it's easy to determine the date. The first of many mass rallies held in Beijing on August 18 1966. Due to the extraordinary large amount of "Red Guards" and Cultural Revolutionaries" being hauled in by large P.L.A. military trucks. This was the one and only time the youthful students were hauled into Beijing by the P.L.A. trucks. This is the first day Mao and Lin Biao officially sanctioned the "Cultural Revolution." . DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: . "Mao zhu xi jie jian hong wei bing biao yu: xue xi sh liu tiao.shi liu tiao zhang wuo shi liu tiao yun yon shi liu tiao." "Chairman MAO received the red guards. The slogan: learning article 16. Article 16 and article 16 Article 16 is the application." . THE READING OF THE CAPTION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PHOTO: . "Mao zhu xi a mao zhu xi .hong wei bing rei ye xian nian ni jin tian shi xian le zui da xing yuan--jian dao ni zhe ge xin fu shi ke women yon yuan bu hui wan ji ce sheng long long zheng da de ge sheng fei xiang mao zhu xi ge ming lu sheng jin feng yu qian nan wan xian zhi bu yu !" . Translates as: . "The red guards miss you day and night achieve the biggest wish -to see you today. The happy moments we will never forget. Car pounded at the earth song fly to chairman MAO Revolution is the way after the wind and rain Mao Appears and he does not move! " . CONDITION: . This piece has been restored and mended in several places although it is in less than 'excellent' condition it is complete with a few stains at the upper left corner upper center 1/3 rubbed with minor loss center folded then folded again in quarters with other folds bends repairs/mends. . The front surface is by and large complete with signs of the tears mended from the verso text block at the bottom front complete ample margins on all edges soil in the upper margin. Verso shows use of gray paper for mends to the tears. The work is now solid all tears closed some repair with Japanese Washi handmade acid-free paper & rice glue other gray paper mends glue source unknown. . Being a very important and historic photograph we have elected to include this in our collection because of its extreme rarity and great importance documenting the day of the beginning of official & public acknowledgement to the "Cultural Revolution" and "Red Guards" movement. . We are critical to a defect but believe this to be in better condition than we describe. It is solid and ready for display. . RARITY: This is a very RARE original period ephemeral piece ! It has survived for nearly 50 years in China where such things we're not appropriately protected stored nor treasured. . It is entirely possible this was a late addition to local newspapers issued on August 181966 to demonstrate the scale of the historic mass rally. It is printed on fairly good paper not newsprint therefore it has survived without major loss to the paper. .
