George Boole (1815?1864), mathematician and logician, was an original member and the institution provided him with a source for reading and the stimuli of lectures and classes. Boole had the opportunity to mix with such prominent men in Lincoln as Dr Edward Parker Charlesworth, the physician, and Thomas Cooper, the radical thinker and Chartist. Jewish historian, particularly in the area of 19th-century studies. He was ordained by Hebrew Union College in 1943 and served as rabbi in Mobile, Alabama (1943-44) , Mansfield, Ohio (1946-48) , and Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel, Philadelphia (1949- ) . From 1944 to 1946 he was a U. S. Navy chaplain. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral, the first Jewish Chaplain to achieve this rank. He retired in 1978. Korn chaired the Central Conference of American Rabbis' Commission on History (1953-57) , and was president of the American Jewish Historical Society (1959-61) " (EJ) . First edition of Archbishop Benson's famous 'Lincoln Judgment', following the ecclesiastical trial of Edward King, Lord Bishop of Lincoln, charged with eight ritual offences carried out in the Diocese of Lincoln. One of the most important ecclesiastical trials relating to the Oxford Movement, the case delivered two fundamental judgements. First, a binding legal decision on certain disputed questions of ritual, and secondly that the jurisdiction of the archbishop of Canterbury alone is sufficient to try one of his suffrgan bishops. A rare survival.
large scale engraved map (1165 x 1440 mm), with contemporary outline colouring, dissected into 32 sections and laid on linen, calligraphic title and dedication and mileage scale, slight browning and faint offsetting, folding into contemporary slipcase which is worn and torn, manuscript label pasted on upper cover "Hunting Map, H. Lowe". The first issue of this rare map of Belvoir Castle and the surrounding area, King issued a corrected edition in 1836 which is of similar rarity.
