Appointment of Ethan Allen Hitchcock to the rank of Major General of Volunteers. Boldly co-signed by Edwin Stanton Secretary of War and Adjutant General L. Thomas a few small holes at the folds else fine fresh and dark. Lincoln 1809-65 16th President of the United States 1861-65 and one of the most important figures in American history. Hitchcock 1798-1870 Graduated West Point in 1817; served in Florida war; later with Winfield Scott in Mexico. He was commissioned Major-General of Volunteers as per this document in 1862 and rendered many valuable services to Lincoln's administration and the Union Army see Basler's Lincoln for numerous references to him.
