18292194C. Billard's Krankheiten der Neugebornen und Säuglinge nach den neuesten klinischen und pathologisch-anatomischen im Hospital der Findelkinder zu Paris gemachten Beobachtungen. Aus dem französischen frei bearbeitet von Fr. Ludw. Meißner. Leipzig bei C. H. F. Hartmann 1829. X 384 2 pages 2 large folded engraved and color printed plates on a black background 330 x 195 mm. Cont. black boards red morocco label. 210 x 123 mm. Boards rubbed and soiled title with privat owner stamp Joseph Meyer browned due to paper quality. Together with: Pathologisch-anatomischer Atlas. Zur Erläuterung der Geschichte der Kinderkrankheiten von C. Billard. Weimar im Verlag des Grossherzogl. Sächs. Landes-Industrie-Comptoirs 1829. 4 pages text 7 engraved plates printed in colours with added hand-colouring of which two with an black background. Publisher's ocre printed wrappers. 4to 300 x 240 mm. Spine with tear covers lightly spotted.

Very rare complete work on neonatal medicine with color printed plates and with the often lacking atlas which was delivered later and printed by another publisher; as the title-page of the text-volume states "Die Kupfertafeln werden in einigen Wochen nachgeliefert". Billard's book was the first systematic clinical - pathological text on the newborn infant and thus indirectly the fetus was also studied. His experience of newborn infants was based on a year working at the Hospice des Enfants Trouvés in Paris. During that year 1826 5392 infants were admitted to the hospital of which 1404 died. The text is packed with original descriptions and insights which in many instances have been credited to others since his time. "The approach is so modern that it may be read with delight and value by anyone with an interest in perinatal medicine." Dunn 1990. Charles - Michel Billard 1800-1832 studied medicine in Angers and Paris. During this time he was very poor and supported himself by writing for medical journals and undertaking translations having learned English German and Italian. In 1828 he published his masterpiece contracted phthisis. The book was translated with commentaries by the German obstetrician gynecologist and pediatrician Friedrich Ludwig Meissner 1796-1860 who lectured from 1821 in the university in Leipzig before he opened his own clinic in 1838. "M. Grimm Kleine-Tebbe Stijnman. "This pioneer work on the pathological anatomy of infants includes interesting observations on cerebral congestion intestinal disturbances the pulse teething etc. It includes the first classification of infantile diseases of any importance" Garrison-Morton-Norman 6332 describing the Paris 1828 edition.

"The most important Billard work clearly was the Traité the first pediatric work to classify diseases based upon pathology and utilizing an organ-specific organization. After discussing neonatal skin coloration length and weight facial expression cry and pulse he classified diseases into categories such as skin including exanthems leprosy and anthrax digestive organs abdominal viscera airways circulation cerebrospinal system locomotion reproductive organs lymphatics eyes jaundice blood abnormalities and congenital abnormalities. He provided detailed analysis of eighty-six autopsied cases covering a wide array of congenital and acquired conditions. Among the many now familiar disorders included is the first description of neonatal gangrenous enterocolitis today's necrotizing enterocolitis and description of kernicterus in four infants. Charles-Michel Billard changed the trajectory of pediatrics by establishing an objective scientific basis for ailments of neonates and young children recognized throughout Europe and North America. Modern pediatrics and pediatric pathology are greatly indebted to Billard's monumental efforts and observations and he should be included in the pantheon of pediatrics." 1837M13453Paris:: J.-B. Bailliere Libraire de l'Academie Royale de Medecine; Londres: Meme Maison 1837. 1837. 22 cm. 8vo. vii 1 502 2 pp. Half-title index errata; occasional light spotting. Contemporary quarter blind and gilt-stamped calf marbled boards. Near fine. First edition posthumously published. "The most important pediatric treatise of this period was that of Charles-Michel Billard . . . of Pelouaille France who studied medicine at the Ecole secondaire of Angers 1819-23 and came up to Paris in 1824 having acquired the funds by a prize essay on the gastro-intestinal mucous membrane 1825. He was very poor had to eke out a living by translations journal articles and other hack-work and did not get his medical degree until 1828. In the same year he published his treatise on the diseases of newborn infants and sucklings with an atlas 1828 3rd ed. 1837. . . " Though not this work the emphasis is the same on pathology and observation. "Billard performed several hundred autopsies on infants and children and correlated the data obtained with clinical observations he had done. This pioneer work on the pathological anatomy of infants includes interesting observations on cerebral congestion intestinal disturbances the pulse teething etc." Berton born in Dinant was a French military surgeon. He also wrote prior to this work Traite des maladies des enfants nouveaux-nes et a la mamelle etc. Paris 1828 xv 653 pp. -- also issued in 1837 pagination differs. Abt-Garrison gives fine detail of that publication not mentioning this posthumous one. The orientation of Billard was based first on his vast experience of autopsies of children the influence of Bichat and Laennec. It was thus the "first pediatric treatise in which a uniform classification of diseases is attempted. . . " The present work is surely an extension of that effort. REFERENCES: Not in Grulee.
