144619It is an exceptional gelatin silver photographic print measuring a gigantic 530 × 510 mm approximately printed from the negative by the photographer for Michael Treloar in the mid-1990s. Treloar went to an exhibition of Simpson's work at his studio at the time and saw the image on display. It had been commissioned originally as part of a series of portraits of significant older South Australians for an exhibition at the David Jones Gallery in the later 1970s. Treloar in turn commissioned David Simpson to produce a small quantity of prints ten from memory. The photographic paper used to print them was old stock long obsolete; the results were so impressive another batch possibly five was commissioned. Alas only modern paper could be had - still very large at 470 × 475 mm still a wonderful portrait - but the difference was sufficient to determine that no more prints were commissioned. The original lot were signed and dated 1977 by the photographer and subsequently all prints were personally signed in black felt-tipped pen by Sir Don Bradman. The group of very large format prints has been in storage for nearly twenty years forgotten about if not exactly lost until now . The outstanding quality of these portrait photographs make them a far more fitting tribute to the man than a lot of the pedestrian and indifferent material universally on offer. The 470 × 475 mm prints signed by Sir Don Bradman are available for $1250 each. unknown

Two large-format gelatin silver photographs each 351 × 264 mm signed by the photographer in the negative with his studio inkstamp and manuscript reference number on the versos. Some silvering-out mainly around the edges; tiny creases to the corners of the white margins of one print; overall in excellent condition loosely inserted in the original cloth portfolio lettered in gilt on the padded front panel in excellent condition albeit with a spot of surface wear near the middle of the spine. Clarrie Grimmett the NZ-born Australian Test cricketer was one of the finest leg-spinners of his time. He is photographed in two different poses: head-and-shoulders from the side wearing his cap and blazer; and three-quarter length from the front wearing pullover and blazer with cap in hand. Lenare was the professional name of Leonard George Green 1883-1946; he specialised in society portraits at his London studio. <p>Provenance: Clarrie Grimmett originally purchased at the Christie's auction of the Clarrie Grimmett Collection sold in Melbourne on 13 May 1998. Grimmett played 37 Tests between 1924 and 1936 taking 216 wickets at an average of 24.21. His record for the fastest bowler to take 200 wickets in Tests achieved in his 36th match stood for 82 years and was broken only in 2018. His first-class record of 1424 wickets in 248 matches between 1911 and 1941 includes 513 wickets in his 79 Sheffield Shield matches. He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1931 along with Don Bradman. He was posthumously inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 1996 as one of the ten inaugural members and in 2009 he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. 2 items. 86209William Albert Oldfield 1894-1976 described by Jack Hobbs as the 'best wicketkeeper of his time' played for NSW and Australia and his Test career of 54 matches ran from 1920 to 1937. This photograph is a fine sepia-toned head-and-shoulders studio portrait of Oldfield in a suit; he has signed and dated it 1926 in ink in the bottom right-hand corner above the ink signature of the photographer May Moore. The image size is 280 × 180 mm and it is now archivally matted ready for framing. <p>New Zealand-born May Moore 1881-1931 emigrated to Australia in 1910 and opened her first studio the following year in Sydney. Working initially together with her sister Mina who ran her own studio in Melbourne from 1916 her excellent portrait photography attracted a large clientele especially among artistic circles. May in particular photographed many Sydney celebrities and it is not surprising to find that the cricketing heroes of the day made it to her studio. With 'a studio style using dramatic single source lighting dark backgrounds rich brown toned papers and sombre colour mounts and favouring head and shoulder studies . the sisters were extraordinary in their ability to portray a range of moods appropriate to their sitters' Gael Newton. Illness forced her to retire about 1928 and she died of cancer in 1931. unknown

Original flush-cut yellow cloth with the full title page details repeated on the front cover with the addition of a vignette illustration and ruled border; first and last page tanned; later ownership details on the front pastedown with the name repeated on the dedication page; a near-fine copy. 'First Year of Publication' and rare especially in this condition. A second volume 'The South Australian Cricketers' Guide and Footballers' Companion. 939219Near Fine. Hi For the sites 14th birthday I have listed one of my rare none Wisden cricket books.This lot is a very rare cricket book entitled. The Irish Cricketers in The United States 1879 by One of Them This book is in Very Good Condition but a couple of things to note. The spine has green tape running down it and the book has been rebacked in as much as the covers have been removed and put back on with two binders pages to the front and rear the inside of the covers is blank but it starts on the first page which is Cricket Tour of Gentlemen of Ireland in the United States and ends on the final internal page with publishers line at the end. The covers have a couple of marks but the internal pages are very nice indeed there is a small corner staining page 102 is by far the heaviest and that is shown in the pictures but otherwise they are white and clean pages with minimal spotting if any and very little handling can be seen. The last two Christies sales are below they sold for 6250 and 6000 unknown
