Spine is slightly sun faded and rear cover is lightly marked. Corners are lightly bumped and worn wear to spine ends. Contains all 12 listed colour plates including the frontis 'Prehistoric Dirt Track Race' and many more black and white illustrations. Front free end-paper is missing. Block edge is a little speckled occasional light foxing to edges of some pages. Pages are otherwise clean and crisp but paper is a little darkened plates are clean and bright. Binding is sound. 1850161904. 1850. Unbound. Very Good. Cricket Match - fine decorative watercolour. Mounted on contemporary paper & card with a panel space at the upper edge - maybe for a calendar month as we have had others with the month filled in. Original watercolour most probably by a member of the Waddon-Martyn family of Tonacombe Manor in the mid 19th century. Mounted on contemporary card backing sheet. c9x 7 inches image size Tonacombe is a late medieval manor house built in the early 16th century with 18th century renovations. The main building dates from the marriage of Tomasin Jourden of Tonacombe to John Kempthorne Ley. The house passed through the female line to the Waddon family in the mid 17th century and to the Martyns in the late 18th century. Tonacombe is the original of "Chapel" in 'Westward Ho !' which was partly written there and Charles Kingsley was a frequent visitor. He was born at Holne Vicarage under the brow of Dartmoor Devonshire. <br/> <br/> . unknown
19231Dorset v. Devon cricket match. 22 and 23 August 1924. On one side of a 16 x 20 cm leaf torn from an album. In fair condition lightly aged. The signatures of the eleven Devon players in column along the left-hand edge and those of the Dorset players in a column along the right-hand edge. Details of the match and players are hard to find. Here is a tentative reading of the Devon signatures: 'F H Canok A R Strephardy W F Light S Blakeney K G E<> E. G. Trench J R Carter C R Russell <> G H H Sherlock E A S<>'. And a similarly-tentative reading of the Dorset signatures: 'E. C. Walby W Harrison W. J. Knight M. B. Elderton W. A. Jephson C. A. Cullen A. M. Harrison J S Cummins R. M. C. Ludwick S. I. Jephson J. Although it is 'always difficult to nominate the best of anything' he would say that Bradman was the best batsman Sobers the best allrounder and Warne the best legspinner. 'All the others would be "one of the best."' His biggest influence was his father 'an outstanding club cricketer in Sydney and then when I played first class cricket Keith Miller Arthur Morris and Ray Lindwall'. His hobbies are 'work and golf'.
