These signatures were lovingly obtained by one of cricket's legendary autograph hunters who scours the county circuit with his books in his back-pack to watch is beloved county team and in the hope and expectation that he might be able to add a signature or two to his books on the Ashes series. The 2010-2011 Ashes Series is important as it resulted in a resounding 3-1 series victory for England who retained the Ashes previously won in 2009. Furthermore this was the first time that England had won the Ashes in Australia for some 24 years. A heavyweight team by any account with eight former Invincibles and five future Australian Captains. <p>On the verso are the pencil signatures of the Victorian team for the match against Queensland in Brisbane 16-20 January 1953 SSM 444. The 12 signatures are Hassett Captain Chambers Fitchett 12th man Harvey Hill Ian Johnson Bill Johnston Loxton Colin McDonald Ian McDonald Ring and Thoms. Six of the team played with the Invincibles; in fact only Chambers Fitchett and Ian McDonald were not capped for Australia although Thoms and Hill played in only one and three Tests respectively. The match which Australia won is remembered as Bradman's last test in which he was bowled for a duck in the second innings denying him a three-figure average. On a 16 x 11 cm leaf removed from an autograph album. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Presented portrait-style with 'ENGLAND - OVAL - 1948' neatly written at the head. Beneath this in two irregular columns are the signatures of the players with the exception of the signature of Eric Hollies bowler of the ball which dismissed Bradman in the Australian second innings the signature of substitute Reg Simpson present instead. The signatories are in the first column: Jack Crapp John Dewes Allan Watkins Jack Young Alec Bedser Reg Simpson substitute for Eric Hollies; and in the second column: Norman Yardley Bill Edrich Denis Compton Len Hutton captain Godfrey Evans wicket-keeper. 27391Very Good. A sepia-toned albumen paper photograph 180 × 240 mm unmounted with a contemporary press stamp printer's annotations and a mounted typed caption slip on the verso. One horizontal crease across the photograph a centimetre or more clear of the back row of figures; in excellent condition with the later inkstamp of the 'Davis Sporting Collection' on the verso. The caption is explicit: 'The South African Cricket Team photographed at Lord's today. They will play their first match this season tomorrow Saturday v. Derbyshire .'. Accordingly this photograph was taken on 3 May 1912. <p>To quote Wisden: 'The South Africans failed so dismally in the Test matches that although they won thirteen of their less important games their tour can only be regarded as a failure'. In the triangular tournament even the non-representative Australian team proved far too strong winning decisively their first two Tests but to put things into perspective after that second victory 'the Australians did not win a match the record for the rest of the tour coming out at four defeats twelve draws and one match abandoned'.
