The author brilliantly evoke the early years - the atmosphere surrounding the game at the end of the nineteenth century. The charisma of W.G.Grace and F.R.Spofforth predominate. Thereafter appear such cricketing heroes as Trumper, Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Bradman, Hammond, O'Reilly, Miller, Lindwall, Hutton and Compton.
